Challenges

Lemuel~~~ ~looking to the water clock and checking it against the finely-tooled chronometer from My pouch~

Well, it's that time again...

Welcome to the Gorean Shores forum. Same rules as always, no need to beg entrance or departure for the lil' ones, keep off topic chat and greetings to whispers, etc., etc.

If anyone has a topic they'd like to discuss, please send it to Me in a whisper. ~S~

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ O.K. - the first topic / question I have is:

"When there is no one else about, how does One deal with a challenge?"

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ tell the one of GS protocol concerning challenges?

Kyoto~~~ What type of challenge?

Lemuel~~~ ~nods at jasma~ Yes, the rules for combat must be agreed upon...anything else?

Kayla~~~ Set it up for a time when Captains can be present... Just quoting the rules sounds like a cop out... Be willing to set the date Captains participation willing and leave it at that... Most would either calm down ot forget about it in the mean time *S*

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ I'm assuming it's a challenge to fight, Kyoto. I could be wrong though...

Kyoto~~~ It depends on the challenge, if it is a death challenge, then both parties must agree on a time and place as well as judges.

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ Aye, it would be best if the fight could be scheduled for when Captains would be able to judge it...at the very least, there should be impartial witnesses if at all possible.

Kyoto~~~ I would also suggest a c&p to help alleviate any confusion.

Paedur~~~ So a death challenge has to take place in front of the Captains?

and there are certain rules?

Kyoto~~~ Aye, no force postings for one.

akeria~~~ ~smiling as she listens to the room~

Lemuel~~~ ~shrugs~ It doesn't *have* to be witnessed by a Captain, Paedur...but I would certainly recomend that one be present if possible. And as Kyoto said, a c&p of the fight is a must.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ *listening quietly to what's being said*

Lemuel~~~ For any that don't know, a forced post is one that claims to have hit and caused some sort of damage. Generally the rule is to say what area you are aiming for and allow your sparring partner to decide whether he will honor the blow or not.

Paedur~~~ Beyond the "rules" We discussed a few weeks ago, what other rules are there?

akeria~~~ may akeria ask a question?

Kayla~~~ nodding

Kyoto~~~ *As I am unsure what rules were discussed, I await clarification...*

Lemuel~~~ ~shrugs~ Most of the rules for Gorean Shores are listed on the Home page, Paedur. As a point of honor, if you should be judged the victor you may wish to give your victim a chance to see Thassa one last time before they die.

Kyoto~~~ Of course akeria, it's an open forum.

Lemuel~~~ ~nods to akeria~ Aye girl. Go ahead.

akeria~~~ what does One challenge another for? akeria knows in the camp for which she was born, They battled over land, gold, and things like that..but what does One challenge for in the Tavern?

Errand Knight~~~ I assume We abide by the five posts (max 10 lines), hand to hand combat rules..and that during a fight, whether to the death or otherwise, there is to be no permanent imairment or kill

Kyoto~~~ Honor, slaves, whatever the two men find they are at odds over.

akeria~~~ ~smiling at Master Kyoto~...

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ For a death match? Mostly over insults and such.

akeria~~~ akeria did not think slaves could be taken, is she mistaken..girl has never heard of Men fighting over slaves

Kyoto~~~ Well, the ultimate goal of a death match is impairment to the point of death... but I think to correctly answer that, you are to avoid all "force posts" which would indicate a death blow or a crippling blow. You just strike and let your opponent decide the damage. The judges will then decide if the blow and subsequent reaction are correct.

Lemuel~~~ ~nods to E.K.~ Yes, I believe those are the rules we have here. Though if the two combatants agree to a different set of rules, I guess there's no reason the couldn't fight using them. For instance, we sometimes shorten it to three posts in the interest of saving time for spars during festivals...

Kyoto~~~ Well, there have been disputes that started out over a slave being taken by another and then challenging the original owner to a fight to the death over her. Those usually resolve themselves in less lethal ways.

akeria~~~ awww that sounds wise...thank You Master Kyoto

Lemuel~~~ ~nods at Kyoto's words~ Yes, it's considered *bad form* to say something like "I swing My sword at His arm, severing it at the elbow." With three to five lines, you would have your oponent dead at your feet before he even gets a chance. Not very sporting. ~G~

Paedur~~~ Thank You Errand Knight, Kyoto and Lemuel.

I think I will rephrase My question for a future forum.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ *correcting as she goes along.. smiling to her Owner*

Kyoto~~~ Paedur, if there is still some confusion, please let us help clear it up.

Errand Knight~~~ thinks the concept of honour is as important as the realism in any challenge, whether during a tournament or otherwise

Lemuel~~~ ~nods~ Aye Paedur, that's what forums are for, answering questions.

Paedur~~~ No Kyoto, no confusion.

Just that the rules posted here are not quite detailed enough for what I am trying to understand.

and My question is also not quite detailed enough to get the information that I want.

and I do not wish to inpeeded the process of the forum while I rethink how to ask what I want to learn. LOL

Rast Dulan~~~ I would like to add something on the Challenge issue...

akeria~~~ ~listening to all the wise Masters~

Lemuel~~~ ~nods to Rast~ By all means...

Rast Dulan~~~ It is more common for a challenge to be between two of different homes. It is not very often that two FM of a home have a dispute worthy of a challenge...

Then one has to be much more careful as to rules and especially judges...

Kyoto~~~ Well, have you sparred as of yet, Paedur?

Lemuel~~~ ~nods~ Yes, and it should also be noted that only those of the Warrior's caste would be *expected* to accept a challenge. This is not to say that those of other castes wouldn't or shouldn't...

Paedur~~~ Yes I have Kyoto, with Brother Shgadowglade, and I have been repaired by Lady Kayla. LOL

It isn't in the ideas of sparring.

more so the thought process which governs what is allowed and not allowed, or what is honored and what is not.

ariel{R}she-urt~~~ *murmurs* perhaps these questions can be answered with practice spars.

Kyoto~~~ *Brow furrowing slightly in thought as I consider his words*

Are you meaning what is allowed in the actual match?

*reaching down to take akeria by the upper arm and draw her to my lap*

akeria~~~ akeria is not understanding why You would spar someone from Your own home

alexis~~~ i'm not understanding any of this

Rast Dulan~~~ Chuckling at ariel..perhaps if there were a prize...lol...

ariel{R}she-urt~~~ practice akeria.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ for practice.. to learn new moves.. to have fun.. to *show off*.. to get rid of tension.. etc.. *s*

ariel{R}she-urt~~~ this is a forum alexis. we talk about Gorean things, try to answer questions that people have. *s*

Rast Dulan~~~ It is less common akeria...but not unknown...shit happens...

Mariposa~~~ perhaps, although it seems uncommon akerita, when a warrior desires some thing or object... or... that has been with another warrior, alongside you could say, there would be a skirmish.. but again, perhaps not.

Kyoto~~~ That's ok, alexis, please ask any questions that might help you to understand.

akeria~~~ aye..*nodding*..okay akeria understands now

alexis~~~ yea the Gorean is easy to see within everyone ariel, just all to me for it to come out on a chatroom...

reminds me of people in highschool off tot he corner playing the card game "Magic"

Rast Dulan~~~ Chuckling at jasma..it's a testosterone thing...grins...with a few endorphins on the side..

Kyoto~~~ *Wrapping my arms about her belly and holding her close as I lay my chin upon her bare shoulder*

akeria, a warrior must always stay in top form and so therefore must practice, that is what a spar is for, it is simply a practice match, not to the death. Now, blood does get spilled, but that is expected.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ *looking to Master Dulan and winking*.. nothing wrong with testosterone.. or endorphins..

Paedur~~~ Well Kyoto.

When Shadowglade and I sparred hand to hand, much to My understanding, pretty much anything goes.

So very controlled but very "dirty" as well.

But with Blades, or other weapons, I am very sure what is allowed in My Own personal traingin with My blades.

But I am not sure what is accaptable here in Gor.

One of My questions a few weeks ago was on poisons, and what uses they had, and what honor or dishonor they held here.

SO just wondering what other "honors" are done here, and what are not.

akeria~~~ ~feeling His breath upon her neck, gentle shivers run through her body, making her squirm just a bit, a soft voice rings to only His ears~

thank You, Sir..for clarifying that for akeria..~smile~

Lemuel~~~ ~looks to Paedur thinking~ Mostly I "play it by ear" when sparring as to whch blows to honor and which to block. It's part of the realism thing to Me. If a blow sounds like it would be easy to block, I block it. If not I accept it. ~shrugs~

Lemuel~~~ ~nods~ Poisons would be a definite "no-no" most other things are acceptable though...

In one of the spars I had My opponent flicked sand from the pit at My face. ~grins~

Rast Dulan~~~ It's like life and war Paedur...not many rules in War in the end. One does what one thinks is right or acceoptable in a spar..Just need to make sure you can live with your actions...not real complicated in the end.

I recall in fact, and Kyoto might also a move called the Claw of death...grins...

akeria~~~ akeria is looking forward to seeing a sparing..she has never seen one

Paedur~~~ Lemuel, Not the blows.

Hmm thinking here.

If it was to be balde to blade, then is it one single balde, or more than one?

IS it something One could pull out of a secret place to be thrown?

or is it One blade to One blade.

Or is it anything pretty mch goes, so only to One's ingenuity and experiences?

Rast Dulan~~~ Paedur...we need to talk...the easy blows are the ones you take...the difficult ones are the ones you block...grins

Paedur~~~ Fine words Rast Dulan.

And I usually follow that same precept and thought.

But One must also learn the rules of the Home as well.

Chuckling as I do remember a time or two of shooting pool and house rules being very far from any set of rule I ever played by. LOL

Kyoto<~~~ Well Paedur, the average spar is 3-5 posts long, each post consists of three offensive actions and to defensive actions. This makes you have to decide which of your oponents blows you will take and which you will duck/block. Let's say we were sparring and i was using my scimitar, I would post something like, stepping in, I make a diagonal slice towards Paedur's chest, moving from left shoulder to right hip I would then do two more similiar types of actions, you would decide, ok, do I block that blow or let it in, if I let it in, it will cut me and I will be bleeding, will that then affect my future actions?

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ The weapons are agreed upon before hand, Paedur. If I agree to fight with a gladius, then that's what we'll use...but that doesn't mean I can't give you a good body slam or an elbow in the ribs too. ~grins~ It just means that the only *external* weapon I can use is the gladius.

As to thrown weapons, that's another "no-no" according to our rules.

Kyoto~~~ *grinning at Rast*

I do believe I chose to block that one... the thought of not was too terrifying.

*laughing*

Rast Dulan~~~ I believe another important element in sparring is the ratio of moves. Usually 5 are allowed...three offensive and two defensive...

Errand Knight~~~ Paedur: as I undrstand it weapons are agreed before a combat and would be hand to hand ..not much point in spears or crossbows ..and their use is judged by skill and realism...so your opponent knows what weapons you use but not how you will use them ..remembering that the use of your body and your agility are also very important

Paedur~~~ Chuckles, why yes Lemuel, the Mind and body of One is always the first weapon.

But I have taken up far to omuch time of this forum.

I will continue to read and ask and talk.

Thank You also Kyoto and Rast Dulan.

Chuckles about taking the easy blows and blocking the hard ones.

Paedur 20:02:35 CST

Paedur~~~ Aye thank You as well Errand Knight.

From My readings so far, they usually fight right then and there without any guidelines. LOL

But then I am still working on the readings. LOL

destiny{CoP}~~~ Thinks about a spar she saw where the Masters kept going on and on... Where if it had been for real, the blows they had taken both would of collapsed from blood loss soon afterwards.

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ Well in the books Warriors would already be familiar with the *rules* (i.e. their codes). And there have to be some compromises made for the virtual medium we interact in.

Paedur~~~ Chuckles about what the Warriors knew and did not know in the books. LOL

or should I say the Author.

Rast Dulan~~~ Looking at kissmet..death Matched are judged on several things and one is realism..

destiny{CoP}~~~ If a spar follows "the rules/codes" but is still sort of dirty. How so the judges determine when one is the victor?

Lemuel~~~ ~grins at Paedur~

Lemuel~~~ ~looks to kiss~ Spars are judged on realism, style, which blows were accepted and which weren't, lots of different things. ~shrugs~

Kyoto~~~ Excellent question, kissmet, it is all up to the judges to decide who fought better and more realisticly

Errand Knight~~~ Paedur: whilst more is said about warriors than anything else in the books (slaves excepted) and there is continuous reference to the warriors code it is not summarised in any single place ..I dont know if there is an online resource which does so

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ I'm sure someone somewhere has come up with a full set of 100 codes, E.K. - not that they found them in the books...I can only think of a handful that I've seen in the books.

Paedur~~~ I understand the Warriors Code quite exceptionally well Errnd Knight, and THAT too is not written but simply taught.

But I have not found a site which tries to place the Code into a readable fashion.

I will continue to follow My Own code, and then collect the ridicule in the whispers. LOL

Kyoto~~~ Paedur, from what little I have seen of you, I think you will do fine.

Paedur~~~ Thank You Kyoto.

So far I still have My head attached to My shoulders. LOL

But Errand Knight also knows of My Code elsewhere and the Issues elsewhere. *S*

But I have lkearned a great deal as well since I began My journies here.

Errand Knight~~~ Paedur: just remember that all were new here and that in My experience there is very litle ridicule if one is genuine in ones attempts on gor. I think most try to help each other along the road

Lemuel~~~ ~nods at E.K.'s words~ Aye, and if You have further questions, many of Us would be happy to answer them through email, Q, etc. as well. My email is always open. ~S~

Lemuel~~~ ~listening to the sudden silence~

Any other topics?

Kyoto~~~ I don't have one, Lem, I enjoyed the one we just had, though.

Paedur~~~ I just had the one simple question Lemuel. LOL

Lemuel~~~ ~grins~ I guess we'll have an early night then.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ *finishing forum notes.. looking to her Owner*

Paedur~~~ Aye Lemuel, sounds like an early night.

Thank You for Your time, and for Yours too Kyoto.

serve well as you always do jasma. *S*

thank you for scibing.

Lemuel~~~ ~smiles and shrugs~ I guess I'll officially call this forum to a close then. Let the mad dash for the door begin! ~chuckles~

Thanks everyone for coming and participating. It's the people that make the forums good. ~S~
