How does one become a Council Member

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~taking out the pieces of rence paper and the writing implement.. readying herself~

Rollo the Ax~~~ WELCOME to GS, for out weekly forum.....same rules as always, no cussing, spitting, or chewing tobaco during the forum.........LOL...LOL..

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~laughing softly~

Asellus~~~ *Smiling at Rollo as the forum officially begins*

Shadowglade~~~ *chuckles* And please, if you're a FW DON'T be exposing yourself...well, if you feel the need, go ahead, but stick around after the forum so we can handle it properly *grinning*

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~whispering something about having to swallow then.. ~ lol~

Kayla~~~ OH MY Goodness... Please no chewing bacca

Elektra~~~ ~Checks carefully to see that all body parts are properly and completely covered.~

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckling softly~

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~looking up to her Owner and licking lips teasingly..~

Shadowglade~~~ *quietly looks around, propping his feet up on the table in front of him, as he leans back in his curule chair*

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. well folks...... does anybody have a topic they wish discussed ??????

Lemuel~~~ ~scratching My head trying to think of a topic, thinking of the nearly finished order back in the shop wondering if anyone would be interested in learning how to assemble slave goads...~

Rollo the Ax~~~ Oh come now, folks...... NOTHING to question ?????? LOL...LOL.. Now THAT would be a FIRST in on-line Gor.......LOL...LOL........ * Why is the Thassa green ??? * How did we get the idea to use tharlarion oil lamps ?? LOL..

Paedur~~~ Lemuel.

How does One become a Council Member?

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening.. not thinking of anything to bring up~

Errand Knight~~~ Lemuel: You have an order from a Slaver?

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckling~ Thassa is green because of the algae, we use tharlarion oil in lamps because it's not as aromatic as bosk dung, and... ....to answer Your question Paedur, Members are elected to the Council by existing Captains.

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding to E.K.~ Aye, I had a rather large order from Samos and I *think* I'll *just* have it finished on time. ~S~

Paedur~~~ Oh well that made the discussion quite short ehh Lemuel. LOL

Kayla~~~ and have to meet certain guidelines ~picking up the topic where Lemuel drops off~

Lemuel~~~ ~laughing~ Oh, those are just My opinions, Paedur. Could just be because that's the way Priest-Kings like things.

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL. Paedur, I can answer that one..... some folks get asked to join the Council only after they have show that they are willing to work FOR GS at all times, if the rest of the Council can agree that they would make an addition to it.....

Errand Knight~~~ Lemuel: an expensive piece of equipment! the energy bulbs themselves are a major outlay for a Physician ...slaving must be rewarding *chuckles*

Lemuel~~~ ~nods to the Physician~ Aye, I'm hoping to clear enough on this deal to finally buy My own tarn...

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. and here I would have said its green from all that fish crap, and the first Gorean that stepped on a small tharlarion and then had his sandal catch fire easily came up with the idea.......LOL...LOL.. But who knows.......LOL.

Lemuel~~~ ~LOL~ See Paedur, Rollo had some equally valid answers to those questions. ~G~

Errand Knight~~~ Lemuel: a racing tarn?

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckles looking down at the wide expanse of My gut~ Nay, I think a draft tarn would be a better choice for Me. ~grins~

Rollo the Ax~~~ In truth, Paedur...... the Council is very flexible..... we have operated with as few as 3, and at times had as many as 9-10 Captains and Advisors ...... it depends on the needs of the tavern and those willing and able to help..... they come, and they go...... LIFE is always changing......

Errand Knight~~~ wonders if the Thassa is green past the islands of Cos and Tyros,,suppose it depends on the fish crap

Paedur~~~ I see and understand thank You Rollo.

I assume One must be pledged yes?

Errand Knight~~~ *chuckles at Lemuel*

nay ...a Builders cargo I would think rather than a large saddle!

Rollo the Ax~~~ Oh, yes, Paedur...... All Council members MUST be pledged to GS and call it their HOME.....

Flaming

Rollo the Ax~~~ Okay...... Nobody wants to ask the hard questions, so I'll try........ *

What does " flaming " or insult mean to those present ??? does it mean just disagreeing or is it full on name calling and character assassination ????? true or not ????

Paedur~~~ It is unjust character assignation Rollo.

Asellus~~~ *speaking up* Wow, if one always assumes that anybody who disagrees with him or her is "flaming" that person, then he or she must lead a very hard life--both VT and RT.

Lemuel~~~ ~thinking a moment~

I think flaming can be more subtle as well...and that's where one has to be especially careful online. Sometimes something said in all innocence or something said in jest is misconstrued...

Asellus~~~ ((**Grammatical correction** If one always assumes that anybody who disagrees with him or her HAS BEEN "flamed" by the opposing one's disagreement then the person in question must lead a very difficult life--VT and RT.))

Kayla~~~ Disagreeing I think is healthy.. It is the way a disagreement is done that makes it a flame... there is no reason to curse and call names to make a point. To say someone is wrong (or wrong by YOUR opinion) can be done without saying they are full of shit... LOL... Even if they are...

jasma{LB}GSFG~listening quietly~

Asellus~~~ Flaming is also instigating, I think. Taking the opportunity to make those sharp little unnecessary digs at another person's expense just to get a rise out of him or her.

Kayla~~~ Though responding in kind sometimes for the moment feels good *ss*

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~softly offering~.. according to dictionary.com, and a girl won't give all the definitions..

but one says:

Informal. An insulting criticism or remark meant to incite anger, as on a computer network.

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ Aye Kayla. You and I have disagreed in the past and no doubt will again in the future, but it is always with respect for the other's opinion and w/o name-calling.

Errand Knight~~~ aye Asellus I agree ...I would think that few goreans would play the player rather than the issue..there is no honour in it..and after all gor allows more constructive ways of settling personal dispute rather than differences over issues. A bit sad to flame another over a false move playing kaissa

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL... Here in lies the heart of many problems..... semantics or definitions .... or perhaps just opinions....... some folks just can't accept that if you don't think JUST the same as they do, that you are not WRONG.... and they RIGHT.....

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ this one feels that it's not disagreeing with someone else's opinions.. for that is going to happen over and over again.. to her it is when there's name calling involved and things said to entice another into responding.. negatively..

Paedur~~~ I think when the disagreement gets to name calling. Then it is the one calling names which has lost.

Elektra~~~ Hmmm...to me, flaming is attacking or impugning somebody's character.

Flaming is more than simple disagreement of somebody else's viewpoint or opinion. Flaming is malicious.

Kayla~~~ ~sticking out My tongue at Captain Lemuel then smiling~ I think respect for the person though has alot to do with it... At least it does for Me.. If I respect a Person then I will bust My hump not to stress a point in a way that is insulting but if I am speaking with or to a person I already have no respect for those safety nets are not in play

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening~.. but differences of opinions are healthy and it means that each of us do have a mind of our own.. that we're not robots living in a society.. either Earthen or Gorean.. If everyone agreed on everything.. not only, in this one's opinion, would everything then seem boring.. but how would we learn what other's felt?

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckling and nodding~ Yes, with some people it is a bit harder to keep one's cool.

Rollo the Ax~~~ Aye, responding to an unjust insult is often the first response, and is not often the best course of action..... Gods know that I am as guilty, if not more so, than most...... I have fought a quick and foul temper My whole life.... it is a character flaw that I admit freely.....

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ but in the same manner, respectfully, Mistress Kayla.. even if one don't have *respect* per se for another.. don't mean it gives that person the right to take the gloves off and let the shit fly, so to speak.. to this one.. it only brings that person down to the other one's level..

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding to My girl~ Aye, and by listening to diverse opinions with an open mind we can actually learn something once in a while.

Errand Knight~~~

"There is no single humanity, no single shirt, no correct pair of shoes, no uniform, even a gray one, that will fit all men. There are a thousand humanities possible. He who denies this sees only his own horizons. He who disagrees is the denier of difference, and the murderer of the better futures." (Savages of Gor, p.31)

Asellus~~~ Maybe the true topic ought to be how to keep our tempers? *smiling wryly*

Asellus~~~ Wow, EK! Great quote!! *smiling broadly*

Lemuel~~~ ~smiles at Asellus~ I find it much easier to keep my temper online than in r/t. Just worrying about hitting the right keys slows Me down and makes Me think before hitting the "send" button.

Paedur~~~ I always like responding to an insult with an insult that they must think about. *WEG* LOL Most times they don't even get it. LOL

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening once again.. ~

Asellus~~~ Hmmm...maybe to some, because of the fact that we are online, use that as an excuse to pop off without thinking...without remembering the person behind the monitor...

Elektra~~~ ~giggles and thinks about the times I've heard Paedur do just that to people who were oblivious.~

Kayla~~~ I am not disagreeing jasma *ss* but then I also usually only respond to attacks and not attack first by then the gloves are off anyway... I must admit it has been very hard for Me not to post more to what has been said on the boards... Even with the open attacks that no One could say was not flaming I have not posted much to...

This I have done for several reasons.. First I consider the source.. Second I do know it makes it worse... Third when I respond I sometimes will go overboard ~sheepish grin~ and lastly it does no good...

But There are times when My line is crossed... ~shrugs~ when I personally think I HAVE TO set a record straight... But If I responded to each post of late I would spend all My time at the boards

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~smiling softly as Mistress Asellus speaks~.. a girl feels alot of times that people do forget that Mistress..

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening to Mistress Kayla and nodding head~.. aye Mistress..

Asellus~~~*offering another thought*

Perhaps....and this is just a thought...that maybe when people read posts on the boards they get halfway through what the person is trying to say...and are already formulating a snappy retort or response without having read and heard the person's true message. Even in the chat room itself....read the posts in their entirety before jumping to respond immediately...

Paedur~~~ There is no consequences to online so people tend to take advantage of it. no consequences so no punishment.

Lemuel~~~ To Me, I can see losing one's temper in a *live* chat environment, but on the boards??? We have plenty of time there to think about what we will say and what the consequences will be. I don't think there's any excuse for using the board like to flame.

Kayla~~~ I don't know about Others Asellus but I tend to read a post several times before beginning to think of even if I wish to reply... especially those that are slamming Me because I get so angry that I miss pieces and have to read it a few more times *S* But that is Me

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ aye, Master Paedur.. a girl agrees also with that.. but to her, it don't make it right.. it makes her wonder what the person is trying to prove.. and if there really is something to prove..

aye, Mistress Asellus.. jaz agrees with that also.. to read it fully..

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~agreeing with her Master.. nudging head against His thigh~

Paedur~~~ jasma, it is T/those that go beyond what they can get away with, and they do what is right, who earn My respect, and My Friendship.

Lemuel~~~ ~curling a stray lock of sable hair about My finger as I look down at My girl, smiling~

Kayla~~~ Actually Paedur I think there are consequences... if nothing else they way We are perceived by Our words on the boards is a consequence. Whether is is petty response or thoughtful reply and even Our silence or lack of response

Paedur~~~ It is in doing what is right regardless.

Asellus~~~ *smiling* Well, that's great, Kayla.

Paedur~~~ It is in doing what is right regardless of the short cuts, which says a great deal of O/one.

Finishing My statement after My burp. LOL

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~purring softly and listening~..

it's not hard to know what is right, in this one's opinion.. may be hard to *do* what is right though.. ~s~.

Asellus~~~ *Smiles at jasma and nods* Mm-hmm.

Paedur~~~ But Lady Kayla, Many feel so what about perception just change a name and go on.

Rollo the Ax~~~ folks, let admit that we are just human beings..... we have personal opinions, dislikes, and preconceived notions about many things..... and yes, at times, we are already getting pissed off about what another is saying BEFORE they finish saying it..... so our brains do not always behave in a rational way, no matter how much we want then to...... once the demon is awaken, it is very hard to lull it back to sleep......

Kayla~~~ "right" is I think subjective to Ones owns thoughts and feelings and moral standards

Errand Knight~~~ jasma: aye lilone ...how do we know what is right and is what is right for an earthen right in gorean terms?

Kayla~~~ Has anyone met this CROIX person except what is written on the boards?... ~speaking of changing names *ss*

Asellus~~~ True, Rollo. So hard to be "Gorean" when we are very much so "Earthen"...if you know what I mean...

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding to Rollo~ I know what You mean Rollo. And sometimes when the kettle boils over it's not a pretty sight. ~thinking of things broken in anger~

Rollo the Ax~~~ Also, for some... to not reply to an unfounded insult, or out right lie, is tantamount to silently accepting it or agreeing...... It looks like you have no grounds to refute the accusation or admit that it is true...... ??????? So the need to reply to even the most base of lies ........???

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ aye, Mistress Kayla.. of course it has to do with what each person feels is right.. just because this one may think something is right.. doesn't mean that someone else is going to believe the same thing.. depends on the individual.. but she still don't believe it's hard to know..

Errand Knight~~~

".all wisdom and truth does not lie in my own codes." (Priest-Kings of Gor, p.14)

".but to take truth for granted is not to know it. Truth not won is not possessed. We are not entitled to truths for which we have not fought." (Marauders of Gor, p.7)

"Perhaps we cannot see truth. Perhaps nature has denied us this gift. Perhaps we can sense only its presence. Perhaps we can sense only its heat. Perhaps to stand occasionally in its presence is sufficient." (Tribesmen of Gor, p.256-7)

"Perhaps the world only speaks to those who are prepared to listen." (Beasts of Gor, p.29)

"How hard it is for two who do not share caste to understand one another," (Explorers of Gor, p.431)

and my favourite

"I never trust a man until I know what he eats." (Explorers of Gor, p.383)

Lemuel~~~ ~shaking My head~ No, I've not met the man...

~nodding to Rollo~ Aye, but it's still possible to respond to the lies without resorting to insults. I think it shows the lies for what they are when one responds calmly and rationally to them.

Paedur~~~ Listening.

Asellus~~~ I don't think so, Rollo. I mean, approach is everything. Walking away is another. And if a "flaming" post is made by the One who's words are eventually erased, and we all know it's not true...then why bother beginning the thread to keep it going? It only pulls people out of the woodwork and gives rise to more unnecessary dissension. Personally, I would rather see an empty board and a full tavern.

Errand Knight~~~ Kayla: perhaps a different person, but the same name as One who caused considerable problems in My old vt home

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. Broken things ?? in RT brother Lemuel ??? LOL..LOL.. Rollo is an old man now, and has * mellowed * with age......LOL.. ( yeah, RIGHT !!!!!! ) in my youth I had been know to punch holes in walls, doors, fences..... to keep from doing so to people..... and throwing things ??? LOL.. lets not go there..... anger management has always been a problem for THIS man..... but y'all can only TRY and do as good a job as you can......

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding at Asellus words~ Better to see the board empty or overflowing with benign trivia than to see it smeared with bosk dung.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~respectfully~

Master Knight.. a girl is not trying to be argumentative at all.. and she still feels that a sense of right or wrong.. Gorean or Earthen can be achieved by each individual.. if her Master wishes to kill her.. tis a Gorean way.. however, if her husband kills her.. he goes to jail, because on Earth it is wrong to kill a person..

~not sure if she's making sense anymore~

Paedur~~~ Smiles.

When I get angry I get very quiet. then I do not speak with O/one(s) and keep My wisdom and My time from them. until either it shows I was not worth the time, or I am. *S*

Lemuel~~~ ~grins at the Senior Captain~ Aye, I've been known to do those things as well. And I always tell My woman, better the wall, door, whatever than a living thing.

Asellus~~~ I mean, there are many on the Council...and Rollo, we've all been called names at one time or another...is it stopping us? Nahh...when I hear people slander even the Senior Captain, do I believe it instantly? No. Does my not "speaking up" mean that I agree to what is said? Certainly not. Rather, I find the name-calling laughable and childish...and won't stoop to that level. Question my loyalty to the Council and to the tavern, but I'm still here, aren't I? Many are able to say that and, for me, that speaks louder than any name-calling.

Lemuel~~~ ~grins~ Although...sometimes it's Me that ends up getting damaged when I vent like that...and perhaps that is a good point to make, that sometimes the one you hurt is yourself when you let your temper get the best of you.

Errand Knight~~~

"Why does the nibbling urt chatter and laugh at the larl? Is it because he himself is not a larl, or is it because he fears its paws?" (Explorers of Gor, p.229)

Elektra~~~ It seems to me that one can do more damage with cool logic and carefully chosen words than by insults.

Paedur~~~ Winks to Elektra.

Why NOW You know My secret. LMAO

Sharp Wit I do believe it was, wasn't it? LOL

Elektra~~~ ~Winks back at Paedur~ Takes one to know one! ~giggles~

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ The sword and the pen cut best when they are kept sharp.

Elektra~~~ ~nods in agreement with Lemuel~

Lemuel~~~ ~listening to the sudden quiet that has come over the room~

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~gazing around the room as she tries to tidy up the scrolls~

Errand Knight~~~ mmm..wonders what happened?

Lemuel~~~ ~looking about for the Senior Captain, wonder how the urts managed to carry Him off~

Alright, since Rollo seems to have gone missing, is there anything else on the "Flaming" topic?

Lemuel~~~ ~grins as the Captain enters dripping wet~

Asellus~~~ Whose discretion is it to judge if the post is in fact a flame or not?

Rollo the Ax~~~ Sorry folks, my server dropped Me and it was real fun getting back.......LOL. So, is the flaming topic over ???

Lemuel~~~ ~shrugs~ I'd say that the one it is directed against would likely have to decide that for themselves...

Asellus~~~ But what if no names were mentioned in the post...? *just playing Devil's Advocate here*

Paedur~~~ Listens.

Elektra~~~ One can generally figure out who is being targeted by inference.

Lemuel~~~ ~scratching My head~ Now that's tougher...it depends I guess on whether or not it's obvious who the poster is talking about.

Rollo the Ax~~~ Well, Asellus, I guess that would be either Gary M or Myself, as we are the only ones that can remove a post at this time..... As it stands, EVER posting from Stavros is removed out of hand.. often even before I read them, Gary has this neat listing of posts by name, so all I need do is call it up, and remove everything posted by Stavros..... his slave was also blacklisted, but hers I will at least read before I remove them and decide ...... everybody else is on a post by post decision......

Asellus~~~ Even so...with no name mentioned...why turn it all around and call oneself out on it?...

*adjusting Her veils more securely with a smile*

Inquisitive minds, you know....*Laughing*

Errand Knight~~~ thinks an interesting question is why some choose to flame and why some and not others are the target of such attacks

Elektra~~~ I suppose that would depend entirely on what one stands to lose, Asellus.

Rollo the Ax~~~ and again, it is Me that decides if some inference is a general one or a veiled attempt to insult a specific person...... I guess that should there be a general vote of * No Confidence * in My ability or objectivity, I could hand the power over to another Captain ??????

although WHY any of them would WANT the headache is beyond Me.......LOL..LOL..

Asellus~~~ **buttoning Her lips with a smile**

Kayla~~~ ~listening quietly~

Paedur~~~ Chuckles as the Ladies get all quiet. LOL

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckling~ I know I wouldn't volunteer for that duty Captain. ~S~

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening quietly as fingers get a bit of a break from scribing~

Asellus~~~ Just giving other people a chance to ask questions...*smiling at Paedur*

Rollo the Ax~~~ Once again, it is a personal * mind set *..... Why does this or that insult seemed aimed at ME, or YOU ??? Should I get upset at * ALL men are Bastards * or only at * Bald, fat, bearded, men over 50 are all bastards * ??????? or neither or both ????? the possibilities are endless and reasons shrouded in our own minds.......

Kayla~~~ LOL... What is an obvious insult to Me may not be seen by others ~shrugs~ That is why people respond so differently to the same post

Asellus~~~ Ahhhh-HA! *smiling at the Sr. Captain*

Rollo the Ax~~~ Well folks.......should we call it a night ??? our 2 hours are up.....

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ Aye Captain. Sounds like a plan to Me. ~S~ Thanks for hosting the forum Rollo. it was great as always. ~S~

Asellus~~~ It was a great forum. Thank you for moderating it, Rollo. 'Tis good to see You in the tavern.

Thank you for scribing the notes, first girl. *smiling at jasma*

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ a girl thanks You, Master Rollo for moderating and allowing one to be able to speak and learn..

~smiling to Mistress Asellus.. ~.. one wishes You well.
