Gorean Familes/Relations?

Rollo_the_Ax 19:40:57 CST

Okay.... our first topic or question is as follows...

** Question: what does GS think of how many are copying the AOL type of RP where "so & so  is sister to so & so, who is Father of so & so and cousin to so & so" ...

Will GS ever get into that? why or why not... and is that sort of RP stuff   John Norman gor"? *** Any responses or opinions ???

tayla{GS} 19:42:36 CST

i think it's silly. at the rate some sites are going before long people have to have incest with a family member to get any in rp

akeria_{Orion} 19:42:59 CST

akeria does not see GS heading in that direction..as tis a port where people drift in and out of..

Deirdre 19:43:03 CST

*confused at the question.......thinking hard*

Who's on first? I'm related to somebody here? I don't think so.......I  mean......*thinking*........two possibly three living brothers in Gor.......no sisters..........dead parents.......One live Companion.......Did I miss something?

{KUURUS}'silken-RESTRICTED 19:43:10 CST

well silks was to think of developing a *twin sister* who lives in another part of gor....or would that be dualling???

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:43:43 CST

i think it's silly as well. Then further in the roleplay, someone wants to FC another and it becomes utterly ridiculous...

wynter_kiss~ 19:43:45 CST

Having been to JAG, and seeing the Family thing there, i think it makes for interesting RP, and it adds more fun.

It could only happen if Gorean Shores actively talked amongst itself about this idea and someone started it..and perhaps then the RP Board could be put to use better.

Zoran 19:43:53 CST

lol I agree with Diedre it to complicated and the way we like to grab slave

it could get real messy LOL

Kentucky 19:43:54 CST

They started to do that in yahoo shortly before I left, created about 2 or 3 *clans

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:44:14 CST

silks, unless there is two of you, it would be dualing..

jessenia{Rm} 19:44:54 CST

silks.. who would be the person behind the keyboard of this twin sister?? if she would be someone who would actually rp in GS?

Kentucky 19:45:16 CST

*chuckles * exactly Deidre, besides,IMO,because GS is in Port Kar(city, not homestone) what are the chances any of us would be related?

MA_s_gemm 19:45:19 CST

Master Rollo ...

~ blushing deeply ~

gemm thinks it smacks of total "player gor" that she will avoid places that do that ...

there are many rooms in jag doing that now and this one will not darken their doors ...

gor, to gemm, is about strong Men and succulent slaves - about FW that know their place and are there to support in benign ways... it's NOT about kissy, kissy, let's have a family reunion barbeque like those who "are related to everyone and then some" do!

~ smiles and falls sil

wynter_kiss~ 19:45:28 CST

incest among family? Surely we could invite others into Gorean Shores, and it wouldn't mean that everyone is related to everyone...but then we have the issue of the "playing out kids", which Jarl has already said..does not happen here

{KUURUS}'silken-RESTRICTED 19:45:28 CST

my nurse

Ramses 19:45:52 CST

as intriguing as it might get, I'm not sure I would be interested personally

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:46:25 CST

oh that's so a pet peeve of mine, all this baby crap. GS is a tavern...you really want to be related to everyone and be having kids and stuff running

around? *shrugs*

Zoran 19:46:50 CST

I know there a some here I call Brother but that is because we are close and

have each other backs

but the related thing just seem to much detail needed

MA_s_gemm 19:47:01 CST

yes... it does lead to the "pregnancy sagas ad nauseum" ...

Rollo_the_Ax 19:47:14 CST

okay.. I have ZERO knowledge or experience with ANYTHING to do with AOL role play.... so I can't comment with any authority.... BUT.... the idea of having to produce some sort of false RP * family tree * seems way too involved or needed to ME.....

tayla{GS} 19:47:20 CST

i didn't read the books.. was it common for men to make women their blood sister like sword brother kind of thing?

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:47:43 CST

Master Zoran that is situational not bloodline. You call some Brothers because of what You've been through together...it has meaning that way...

Blade's~savage 19:48:15 CST

"I have a select few (2) that I am close enough here to call sister and FEEL like they could be real "sisters". But that's as -far- as I would every take

the whole 'family' thing.

Except maybe Master being a Daddy."

~Winks and chuckles, crawling closer to indie.~

Jake_Musician 19:48:17 CST

nods Brothers in Arms..not bloodline

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:48:50 CST

tayla, no it wasn't..

although in the books girls did not call each other "sister" and that seems to be done continously online..*shrugs*

Jake_Musician 19:49:23 CST

sister in bondage only perhaps..taken out of context?

tayla{GS} 19:49:37 CST

didn't read all the books

~snorts~

i need someone who knows how to type do it for me

MA_s_gemm 19:50:12 CST

the "sisters" saying doesn't bother me, as, like Men call each other Brother... slaves call each other "sister"

sisters in slavery is what it means to me, though there are a few that are special, but they're still sisters

Blade's~savage 19:50:18 CST

"I don't often even use the term 'sister in bondage', Master Jake. And find myself correcting girls that call me sister, too. It's a very tight term of

endearment for me...and I don't use it loosely."

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:50:33 CST

Master Jake, taken MUCH out of context. i call no one sister...not even my chain, to me they are "chain" but sister is a blood relationship or a heart

felt situation. Calling everyone "sister" would take the meaning out of it (for me)

Rollo_the_Ax 19:51:20 CST

As for if it IS * Gorean * or follows the books ??? In many cases... in many of the societies that John Norman used as his models in his books, YES.... family or linage of family played a MAJOR role in social standing ....

Jake_Musician 19:51:59 CST

segen..I'd make a funny looking sister at any rate..no?

tayla{GS} 19:52:00 CST

i don't mind being called sister, but slaves don't take it to the degree

i've seen some Free where they are related to every tom, hairy and dick

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 19:52:19 CST

Master Rollo, yes i agree but Men did not make FW "Sisters" as they do "Brothers' in arms... FW were FW of this house of that cast etc...

MA_s_gemm 19:53:21 CST

did they walk around with their lineage on a plaque, Master Rollo?

~ grins ~

Ramses 19:53:56 CST

coat of arms, gemm ..*G*

Zoran 19:53:59 CST

I just feel as we have enough issues with getting people into GS

as we said this would take a lot of time to do so

I just see it not helipong but maybe cause some rifts in are home as we all

ready have enough lol

Rollo_the_Ax 19:55:45 CST

Okay folks.... lets accept a few * givens * here...okay ???? it is given that not EVERY person thinks, feels or responses the same way nor do we all

speak the same... so saying, if YOU want to call anybody * brother, sister, mom, dad, or great aunt Martha.... * * I * have no say in you doing so....

just accept that not everybody thinks or feels tha same way.....

Rollo_the_Ax 19:57:57 CST

NOW, as for the practice of some * Gorean * ?? sites or rooms to allow VT babies, and the insueing drug out pregnant slaves or FW ???? For my OWN opinion, and GS policy, it is a total load of TRIPE.....

Laroona 19:58:50 CST

I prefer to answer the topic as I came in late

is that we run GS as Council decrees

not follow other sites

but if I desire to be called sister then so be it

I do not think any of us would have direct lineage in online gor per-say *S*

Laroona 19:59:50 CST

NO way would I ever play being pregnant

that is totally against all internet rules etc to have children in an adult chat room

Zoran 20:01:33 CST

lol and shakes my head as we had this disccussion before

Kentucky 20:03:32 CST

I have never liked seeing pregnancy and such r/p and as far as doing it?

Kentucky did her time*G* I am a newcomer to GS so I have no bloodties, so why do it? As far as being called Sister*shrugs* individual basis

Laroona 20:04:49 CST

I agree with Kentucky

who wants to play pregnant in VT and especially gorean just

akeria_{Orion} 20:05:08 CST

to this girl its all too much like a soap opera when you start adding all the family stuff and being pregnant

Zoran 20:05:46 CST

thinking this subject has turn from the orignail question

segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:05:51 CST

i agree akeira ~smile~

~smiling to Mistress Kentucky~ don't get me wrong, i love my kids (mostly...simetimes...okay hardly ever) but i wouldn't role play it *L*

Blade's~savage 20:06:12 CST

~Nodding in agreement with akeria.~

"Soap opera indeed. It often turns into that. Not always--but often."

Rollo_the_Ax 20:06:45 CST

What else can I say about this issue, folks ???? If somebody out there feels the need accept other on-line folks as their * family * then what does that

say to or about them ??? that they hate their RT family ?? that they have no RT family ??? that they are able to bond with others in VT more so than they can in the REAL world ?????

akeria_{Orion} 20:07:35 CST

in the eyes of akeria Gorean rp should be of raids and festivials and interactions in Taverns, men drinking and slaves serving and dancing....men

trading and sparring those type of things

Blade's~savage 20:07:55 CST

~Listening to Master Roll and contemplating that.~

"That seems very possible, Master. Perhaps some people DO feel closer online than with others. I know I've met a good amount of people that I knew I could tell anything to."

Shadowglade 20:08:00 CST

It could also say, Rollo that they enjoy a rich tapestry of RP and wish to include other folks in their storyline. Of course, I find it silly myself,

but who am I to question the silliness of others?

{KUURUS}'silken-RESTRICTED 20:08:24 CST

silks have no rt family at all....so...does that make her odd....no...i like rp period!

MA_s_gemm 20:08:56 CST

Master Rollo ..

the "family" thing isn't cuz they feel like real family.. it's all "player" stuff... the people doing it do not "feel gor inside of them" .. they're

just pretending

kelsey{HoT} 20:09:15 CST

Hmm, having a family in my experience, has added to the color of extended role play, adding new routes that wouldn't be there otherwise. I mean,

people in the books had family, why is it such a bad thing to cross that over? It doesn't mean their r/t is any less important, it's just a different

spin on the mundane.

Laroona 20:10:09 CST

silks you do as you and others want IMO

Ulrich 20:10:42 CST

akeria you took the words out of my mouth.

If there was so much of those things going on that everyone thought there should be more, then maybe??? but I don't quite get it *shrug*.

I think those types of RP are starting to pick up, and I've seen enough "soap opera" without the family stuff. lol

tayla{GS} 20:12:08 CST

the difference is these people, least the ones i've seen aren't saying they have the same parents and what not they are rping being blood brothers like

when you cut your palm and your friend cuts his then you shake hands.. and it just seems to go too far in my eyes when men are taking women as their

blood sister in that sense

Laroona 20:12:55 CST

PLease I asked that all action posts, greetings be kept to whispers for the sake of the scribes who work hard saving posts, without having to sort through those too

this is directed at those who have been here before

please respect the scribes

thankyou

Rollo_the_Ax 20:15:01 CST

Sister... Brother .... Mother... Father .... ???? what is in a name or title ????? Shakespeare said it well ... basically "" What is in a name ?? Would

not a Rose by any other name still smell as sweet ..."" Worry LESS about what others call you... and MORE about the type of person the world sees you as... I can tell y'all truthfully that * I * have been called many things, by many people... and the fact that I have been called a * name * means less

than nothing.... LOL...LOL... I have been called stuff that many/most of you have never even heard of before... LOL.. in more than English....LOL..

BFD... LOL...

akeria_{Orion} 20:15:12 CST

to each their own on the family thing..akeria just doesn't see it happening in GS...

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:15:57 CST

~agreeing with akeira~

Besides GS is a Tavern with a Piazza it is not a "Lodge or Home" so to speak...

MA_s_gemm 20:20:12 CST

gemm appreciates GS's stand on the issue ...

Rollo_the_Ax 20:20:39 CST

Perhaps the better way to put it is this.... * if having this fake family makes YOUR RP better to YOU in some way, FINE BY ME.... just don't ask ME to follow along the same path nor to care overly about it.... and in GS at least, don't expect us to take much stock in the whole matter....

Taegan 20:21:24 CST

*posts respectfully..thnking maybe one of Her favorite quotes might fit here*..........

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what

others think you are."

~ John Wooden ~

Kentucky 20:21:25 CST

*nods* well said Captian

Blade's~savage 20:21:32 CST

"I think Master Rollo has knicked it on the nose.

It's personal preference."

Rollo_the_Ax 20:28:53 CST

Y'all have to understand... I DO understand completely how much a * FAMILY * name or linage can mean ot or effect any person.... I am Frank, son of Frank, son of Frank .... and I have a son, Frank, and a grandson, Frank.....

not a very common thing in todays society..... in name alone the weight of family has made my life take some turns that many have no way to

understand.....

Zoran 20:30:39 CST

linage is a thing I take dear to my self in RT as I am a direct decndent of

the founding famliy of the town I grew up in

but vt well I just can't see it

akeria_{Orion} 20:31:18 CST

to akeria..adding a family linkage to rping..limits you in some aspects..unless like akeria said before..you wish to take the soap opera

route

Shadowglade 20:31:24 CST

Well, that's the other thing too, isn't it? Tarl Cabbot is the only person I remember, other than various slaves from earth who had a last name. How do

"Family" names even translate on Gor?

kelsey{HoT} 20:36:21 CST

Hmm, I am not quick enough on the ball, but just off the top of my head, if Norman said something to the effect that the Free Companion did not take the name of her companion, wouldn't that mean there was a name to be taken?

Laroona 20:38:26 CST

but there is no FC in Port Kar

but one would think she would take her FC's name, but then how would it look if there was 2 Xertogs running around

kelsey{HoT} 20:41:03 CST

Aye no FC in Port Kar, the man simply 'claims' the woman as his. Again, no name taken...I just think that if Norman mentioned it, he was implying that there was a family name to be taken.

All in all, family role play can add alot to a character, randsom plays, alliances, debts, ceremonies, wars, raids, captures, etc. Though, without

any offense intended, I do think GS is a little to isolated to put that sort of role play into action without there being someone in another realm

playing the family member.

Shadowglade 20:41:20 CST

Well, that's sorta my point Laroona. Xertog has no last name as far as I know.

Marlenus in the books was only known as "Marlenus of Ar", and it struck me when reading the books that Goreans tended to use the archaic naming scheme seen often in Medieval Britain...people naming themselves after their home town, or, in some cases, their caste.

Laroona of the Scribes, for example...or Xertog of Port Kar...kinda hard to have a "Family name" unless so and so is the "Progeny of Xertog and

Laroona"...which strikes me as a very long, and clunky name

Ramses 20:41:47 CST

agrees with kelsey

MA_s_gemm 20:43:32 CST

gemm doesn't enjoy all that elaborate storytelling, so it's good that there are still places left that wish to uphold those who are not here just to

pretend, but rather, are here to express what is felt inside as much as they're able

kelsey{HoT} 20:46:13 CST

Master Shadowglade, if I may, it has to be taken into account that a man seeking to arrange the companionship between a woman would need to contact her family, or house or protector, and would therefore need a name, considering on Gor many had the same use name.

Rollo_the_Ax 20:46:51 CST

LOL....LOL..... Yes... Last names ??? Do y'all think that * MY * family name is AX ???? Rollo the Ax ?? what, is there a Ralph the Ax, Henry the Ax, Alphonse the Ax, Martha the Ax, Mable the Ax ??????? HERE !!!! in on-line GOR, a * last name * is TOTAL horseshit.....

Shadowglade 20:47:10 CST

sure thing Kelsey, but the books don't really state or give any examples of family names....so my question still stands...how does it translate?

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:47:56 CST

kelsey, i think though that courting was done by GOING to the house to ask and usually in smaller "communites" meaning people mixed and knew that you'd be talking about this "Laroona" or that "Shadow" etc... or you would say, i wish to court Laroona the Scribe of Port Kar which would be fairly distinct i would think

Shadowglade 20:48:49 CST

Aye, Zoran it's the northern spelling. In the southern regions it's probably spelled Axe...that's how you can tell someone is from Torvaldsland or

not....*smirks*

BOOK DISCUSSION NIGHTS

Rollo_the_Ax 20:48:42 CST

Okay, the following is the only other topic or question asked to night.....

** has GS ever considered having a book discussion night? **

~wynter_kiss~ 20:49:09 CST

Wasn't there on the Boards..ages ago..someone who did some book sharing stuff?

Laroona 20:50:05 CST

wynter there was a library a couple years or so ago

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:50:56 CST

i think it's a great idea (but i have found with my time on gor) that not everyone has the books and not everyone has read them...

~wynter_kiss~ 20:51:14 CST

Ohh..no, i mean that someone..a slave, had posted up about reading portions of a certain book..and then discussing...on the Boards

Laroona 20:52:20 CST

I suppose if some one posted quotes and there was an interest oR even discussed on the Boards rather than have set nights

it would be easy to add a Quote board as example

Xertog 20:52:39 CST

A book discussion night was brought up by dove on the message boards months ago. I like the idea of it

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:53:55 CST

you know, i didn't realize HOW vastly different online gor WAS to the books until i read them. Reading them was honestly a big eye opener (it was also hard to do, considering that i don't think He was a particularly good writer. i think he was very contridictory and very redundant)....

jessenia{Rm} 20:55:11 CST

~nods with Master Xertog~

i attended a few nights at another site while i was "wandering" and it was very interesting to have passages broken down and explained...

Zoran 20:56:02 CST

smiles

disccusion is good

and I think the borad I dea would be better

jessenia{Rm} 20:56:45 CST

i know there is a part i totally didn't get in the book i'm reading now..

'L'... i got totally lost in trying to figure out what was happening

Deirdre 20:57:33 CST

*nodding to jessenia*

That is the confusing and redundant part.....

Laroona 20:57:33 CST

Captain Rollo if it is agreed

the global mods can add another board

for quotes and discussion open to all

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 20:57:46 CST

Master Jake, i could literally take one page (in a few of the books) and skip a few pages ahead and read EXACTLY the same page...it felt like at

times...OKAY, i GOT IT, could we move along *L*

Rollo_the_Ax 20:58:35 CST

Yes to many of the things raised here.... at one time, I, and others * donated * many books to a * loaning libray * but what ever happened to them,

the Gods only know.... discussions are always welcomed but not as often followed thru.... and the Only concern that * I * have is that due to RT

issues and such, not everybody is able to get the books to read, and so feel less than informed than those that do have them....

segen~Shadowglade's_beast 21:00:10 CST

Master Jake, i really think somewhere along the way He must have had "women" ISSUES! *L*

Kentucky 21:02:14 CST

*nods to segen* I have wondered that, given he started writing them about the same time the women's lib movement started in the States

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 21:03:19 CST

Mistress Kentucky, i see Him sometimes as a pencil pushing geek, that couldn't get a date in high school and had Mother "issues" so created a

world where just being male was enough to get what you wanted...

Rollo_the_Ax 21:04:26 CST

LOL...LOL... Norman is by no means a * literary GIANT * folks... he just got luck and wrote some books that became a CULT CLASSIC..... it happens.... how many of you have read the Tolkein books... ( not just watched the movies ) ??? He did it in three/four books, not 25... but he was still kind of hard to keep with ( at least for a 14 yr old.. )... but we deal with things how we need to.....

indie 21:05:20 CST

but Tolkien was a genius.

Ramses 21:05:29 CST

*chuckling*

I must be a glutton for punishment, having read them too

~segen~Shadowglade's_beast 21:06:44 CST

Master Rollo ~nods~ Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose was one of the most difficult books to read, good but challenging...

i agree with You *nodding*

Rollo_the_Ax 21:07:22 CST

John Norman, or the RT professor that he is, wrote MANY other books also.... several on sexual issues... One was called * Imaginative Sex * so many the guy did/does have issues with sexuality.... LOL.. but he sure as hell has made a name for himself in doing so.....LOL..

~wynter_kiss~ 21:13:27 CST

So perhaps a discussion board for quotes and books would be the best idea?

jessenia{Rm} 21:14:40 CST

quotes... or for someone to ask for an explanation.. or different views on a certain area of a book

bottom of page
