-gor is not poluted and this combined with the use of stabilization makes gor a pretty healthy place
-of course there are cuts, bruises and broken bones with Warriors and at leat to major deaseases for which there is no cure
-gorean medicine is advanced, though different from earthen medicine
-care outside the cities is minimal as no Phyisian caste dwell there permantly, so help is only available from healers of the namads such as Tuchuks

Rollo the Ax~~~ What * I * gleened from the books painted a picture of a caste that had in the far past worked VERY hard to deal with many problems and found * cures * for many.. the stabilization serums fixed MANY problems, but they also had cures for other sicknesses, operations, and such... the Gorean lifestyle lends itself to a very different list of problems than our earthly one.. but the Green caste has seemed to have stayed on top or ahead of almost every medical situation...

Errand Knight~~~ A Physician's responsibilities are as follows in descending order of priority:
A.The General Health of Gor
B.The General Health of one's proximity
C.One's Homestone
D.The Health of an individual
If your Homestone is Port Cos, and you are in Ar, your responsibility is to the general health of Ar, War or no War. Physicians within an army are considered in proximity of their army, not the city it holds under siege.
8.One of the responsibilities of a Physician is that of advice. Any Freeperson (or slave with proper permission) may come to a Physician and seek his advice. They can expect reasonable secrecy and discretion: the Physician's Confidence. He may discuss matters of Physician's Confidence with other Physicians and only other Physicians. He must have the consent of the one asking of his advice before discussing it with anyone not of the Green. Matters of Physician's Confidence cannot be used for selfish gain.
9.Sometimes a patient will need to be kept in the care of a Physician for some extended period of time. A Physician cannot enslave a Freeperson in his care, nor can he allow the patient to be enslaved.
10.. If it is in the interest of greater health, a Physician can enact Euthanasia. An example is in the case of a fatal epidemic or plague; the killing of a violent mass-murderer is not: that is the province of Warriors.

The figure seemed to shrink bakcward and grow smaller in its yellow rags. Pointing to its shadowed, concealed face, it whispered, "The Holy Disease."
That was the literal translation of Dar-Kosis - the Holy Disease - or, equivalently, the Sacred Affliction. The disease is named because it is regarded as being holy to the Priest-Kings. Accordingly, it is regarded as heresy to shed their blood. On the other hand, the Afflicted, as they are called, have little to fear from their fellow men. Their disease is so highly contagious, so invariabley devastating in its effect, and so feared on the planet that even the boldest of outlaws gives them a wide bearth. Accordingly, the Afflicted enjoy a larged amount of freedom of movement on Gor. They are, of course, warned to stay away from the habitations of men, and, if they approach too closely, they are sometimes stoned. Oddly enough, casuistically stoning the Afflicted is not regarded as a violation of the Priest-Kings' supposed injunction against shedding their blood.

Dar-Kosis Pits: As an act of charity, Initiates have arranged at various places Dar-Kosis Pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves, to be fed with food hurled downward from the backs of passing tarns. Once in a Dar-Kosis Pit, the Afflicted are not allowed to depart.

Dar-kosis is a virulent, horrible, wasting disease and is similar in many ways to leprosy. Dar-kosis means Holy Disease and it is also known as the Sacred Affliction. The diseased are commonly known as Afflicted Ones. The name of the disease is rarely mentioned. The Initiates feel Dar-kosis is an instrument of the Priest-Kings to punish those who displease them. The afflicted are holy to the Priest Kings and it is heresy to shed their blood though they can be stoned. It is highly contagious and the afflicted must wear yellow robes as a mark. Many victims also periodically clack a wooden device to warn people to stay away. Initiates have arranged Dar-Kosis pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves, to be fed with food dropped by men on tarns. Once in a Pit, an Afflicted is not permitted to leave.
Because it is considered a holy disease, the Initiates will not let the Physician's Caste search for a cure. Some Physicians in Ar once tried to seek a cure, and were making good ground, when Initiates hired some men to destroy all of their research. Some Physicians still work in secret trying to seek a cure to this dreaded disease. Seeking a cure would be an excellent story-line for a Physician.
Bazi plague is a deadly, rapidly spreading disease with no known cure. Its symptoms include pustules all over the body and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes. Gieron and sajel are two drugs that can reproduce the effects of this disease. The pox is transmitted by lice. Some people are immune to it and for some it is only a temporary problem. Others die swiftly. Slaves that get the pox are usually killed.

Errand Knight~~~ You must remember that we are talking about the Physician's Caste that exists in the civilized cities. In some of the more barbaric areas of Gor, such as the Barrens, the Plains of Turia and the jungles near Schendi, the Caste does not exist. In those area, their medicine is much more primitive. They do not possess medical machines or advanced drugs. They rely more heavily on natural cures, using herbs and plants. The Physician's Caste though would not use such plants directly. They would create drugs from them to give by injection.
Errand Knight~~~ A common function for Physicians is to tend to wounded warriors. Drugs to prevent infection, bandages, stitches, sutures and such would likely be common. Though casts are never mentioned in the books, it seems likely that they would exist. Casts are easy to make. Surgery is performed by Physicians though advanced computer monitoring is not available to them.
Physicians rarely encounter other problems that are common to Earth. Heart attacks and cholesterol problems would be very rare. Frequent exercise and low fat diets would help prevent this. Without the massive technology and pollutants of Earth, many forms of cancer would also be rare. Psychiatrists and psychologists may not exist on Gor as most people seem quite content with their lot in life. They freely accept the Caste system and the institution of slavery. Most Goreans are very well adjusted. Overall, Goreans lead healthier lives than Earth people.
Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. it helps to remember folks, that Gor has some things that ARE the same as earth... LOL. the problem of seperation of Church and State being one of them at times... LOL.. the Initiates may SEEM to be doing the work of the PKs to some, but more times than not, they only did things to make it better for THEM, ( like many religions )... the TRUE PKs, didn't give a happy urts butt about most of the crap the Initiates tried to enforce....LOL.
Kayla~~~ I wanted Others to be what You were saying was not accepted by all of the Caste though... though the list sounds fairly sound... but since the Caste is kinda like all Others as such that there is no written codes... Only the Scarlet has any thing down in writing in the books... I wish JN had gone into more details in other Castes as well

Errand Knight~~~ The zenith of Gorean medicine has to be the stabilization serums. This serum is a life extending treatment. It was developed some five hundred years ago by the physician's caste. Its effect is an eventual, gradual transformation of certain genetic structures, resulting in indefinite cell replacement without pattern deterioration. It is given in a series of four shots. It affects all people differently and on some rare occasions doesn't work. In some rare people, it wears off after only a few hundred years and sometimes it even hastens aging. It is also capable of being transmitted to offspring. Goreans consider it the right of all people, free and slave, to have the serums. They do not deny the serums to anyone. The Priest-Kings do have better serums.

I had spent eight days in the slave pens, waiting the night of the sale. I had been examined medically, in detail, and had had administered to me, while I lay bound, helplessly, a series of painful shots, the purpose of which I did not understand. They were called the stabilization serums. We were also kept under harsh discipline, close confinement and given slave training. I well recalled the lesson which was constantly enforced upon us: "The master is all. Please him fully."
"What is the meaning of the stabilization serums?" I had asked Sucha.
She had kissed me. "They will keep you much as you are," she said, "young and beautiful."
I had looked at her, startled.
"The masters, and the free, of course, if there is need of it, you must understand, are also afforded serums of stabilization," she said adding, smiling, "though they are administered to them I suppose, with somewhat more respect than they are to a slave"
"If there is need of it?" I asked.
"Yes " she said.
"Do some not require the serum'?" I asked.
"Some, said Sucha, "but these individuals are rare, and are the offspring of individuals who have had the serums."
"Why is this?" I asked.
"I do not know," said Sucha "Men differ."
The matter, I supposed, was a function of genetic subtleties, and the nature of differeng gametes. The serums of stabilization effected, it seemed, the genetic codes, perhaps altering or neutralizing certain messages of deterioration, providing, I supposed, processes in which an exchange of materials could take place while tissue and cell patterns remained relatively constant. Aging was a physical process and, as such, was susceptible to alteration by phvsical means. All physical processes are theoretically, reversible. Entropy itself is presumably a moment in a cosmic rhythm. The Physicians of Gor, it seemed, had addressed themselves to the conquest conquest of what had hitherto been a universal disease called on Gor the drying and withering disease, called on Earth, aging. Generations, of intensive research and experiementation had taken place. At last a few Physicians drawing upon the accumulated data ot hundreds of investigators, had achieved the breakthrough, devising the first primitive stabilization serums, later to be developed and exquisitely refined.
I had stood in the rage startled, trembling. "Why are serums of such value given to slaves?" I asked.
"Are they of such value?" she asked "Yes," she said, "I suppose so." She took them for granted, much as the humans of Earth might take for granted routine inoculations. She was unfamiliar with aging. The alternatie to the serums was not truly clear to her.
"Why should slaves not be given the serums?" she asked. "Do the masters not want their slaves healthy and better able to serve them?"

Errand Knight~~~ Slave wine is a Gorean contraceptive, and much more effective than any Earth one. In liquid form, women drink it and are protected against conception. It is intentionally bitter when given to slaves though for free women it may be sweetened. The active ingredient in slave wine is sip root. In its raw form, sip root can also be chewed and used as a contraceptive. In this form, its effects will last for three to four moons. The Red Savages in the Barrens use sip root in its raw form. In its concentrated liquid for, the effects of slave wine now last indefinitely. This was not always the case. In the beginning of the Gor series, slave wine only lasted a month or so. But, medicine has advanced during the series and its effects are now indefinite. Despite this fact, many masters still administer slave wine to their kajirae once or twice a year. This is done out of tradition and to remind girls of their slavery. Its effects can be nullified by a releaser, an antidote called breeding or second wine. This is a smooth and sweet drink. Its active ingredient is a derivative of the teslik plant.

The guard took me and threw me, belly down, on the platform, fastening my wrists over my head and widely apart, in leather wrist straps. He similarly secured my ankles. The physician was busying himself with fluids and a syringe before a shelf in another part of the room, laden with vials.
I screamed. The shot was painful. It was entered in the small of the back, over the left whip.
They left me secured to the table for several minutes and then the physician returned to check the shot. There had been, apparently, no unusual reaction...
We returned, similiarly, to the physician's house on the next four days. On the first day I had been examined, given some minor medicines of little consequence, and the first shot in the Stabilization Series. On the second, third and fourth day I received the concluding shots of the series. On the fifth day the physician took more samples.

Aging was seen as a disease, not an inevitable fate. Centuries of research went into seeking a cure for aging. Unfortunately, this also meant that research into cures for other diseases was ignored. Many people, who were suspectible to those diseases, died during that time. As it was only the resistant that survived, this did tend to strengthen stock. Some diseases died out and others would be later cured once the Stabilization Serums were created.
The effect of the Serums is an eventual, gradual transformation of certain genetic structures, resulting in indefinite cell replacement without pattern deterioration. It affects all people differently and on some rare occasions doesn't work. In some rare people, it wears off after only a few hundred years and sometimes it even hastens aging. It is also capable of being transmitted to offspring. The initial Serums were crude but they have been carefully refined over the years. The Priest-Kings possess better Serums but they are for their use only. Goreans consider it the right of all people, free and slave, barbarian or civilized, to have the Serums. They do not deny the Serums to anyone. The Serums are given in a series of four shots, one shot a day for four days in a row. They are injected into the small of the back, over the left hip. On the fifth day, they can take a sample from you to ensure that the Serums have taken hold. Matthew Cabot is the only known person in the books to benefit from the Serums. He came to Gor over 600 years ago.
