Medical Care on Gor

Rollo the Ax~~~ Tal, Brothers CD and Lemuel, Advisors Emerald Forest and Kyoto, also Lady Consultants Kayla and Asellus..and everybody else also... Shall we begin this weeks forum ??? same rules as always ... Does anybody have a topic they wish discussed ??? if so, whisper it to Me...

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL... And might I say that is is GOOD to see so many new folks coming to GS and the forum... and also to see somany of our new kajira with their icons...LOL.. very good, girls... I am pleased...

Rollo the Ax~~~ Well... we have two topics so far... I think that the first one in was " I've been investigating the medical care available on Gor, both v/t and in the books. What do people think is the level of care available to the people of Gor? "

Rok~~~ *chuckles* I will answer that after Kayla sews Me up!!

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ Well, it says in the books that medical technology is one of the areas that the Priest-Kings allow the men below the mountains great freedom to explore...so, I'd say it must be quite advanced.

Kayla~~~ LOL.. depends of if a Healer or Physcician is available...

Kyoto~~~ *Chuckling as I hear Rok*

Timely response, sword brother, from what I've seen, every Physician should carry a medical kit of some sort if they are "open for business", sterilized needles, thread, etc...

Rollo the Ax~~~ I may not be the best to try and explain or offer facts on this topic, so I'll let those of the Green caste here answer...

Errand Knight~~~ smiles and makes a few observations becoming a Physician:

-gor is not poluted and this combined with the use of stabilization makes gor a pretty healthy place

-of course there are cuts, bruises and broken bones with Warriors and at leat to major deaseases for which there is no cure

-gorean medicine is advanced, though different from earthen medicine

-care outside the cities is minimal as no Phyisian caste dwell there permantly, so help is only available from healers of the namads such as Tuchuks

Kyoto~~~ I think this quote shows how far advanced their tech really was...

"Further, certain pieces of his instrumentation were clearly far from primitive. For example, there was a small machine with gauges and dials. In this he would place slides, containing drops of blood and urine, flecks of tissue, a strand of hair. With a stylus he would note readings on the machine, and, on the small screen at the top of the machine, I saw, vastly enlarged, what reminded me of an image witnessed under a microscope. He would briefly study this image, and then make further jottings with his stylus.

--Captive of Gor 7 Page 92 - 94"

Deirdre~~~ *nodding in agreement to EK's post*

Aye......or those of traveling Physicians.....

galah{RA}~~~ was blood transfusions ever mentioned in any of the books? like if an injury was very bad and much blood was lost

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding at Kyoto's quote~

Aye, and there are the stabilization serums, very little disease, etc.

Lemuel~~~ ~shaking My head~ I don't believe so, galah.

Kyoto~~~ Yes galah, there were, let me see if I can find that quote.

Errand Knight~~~ all Physicians do carry their medicial sachet and under their Cylinder oath are required to treat A/any..their particular obligation is to their Homestone then beyond that to Any on gor

Lemuel~~~ ~scratching My head~ Do You remember which book, Kyoto? I can help look...

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~

I sprang to my feet and ran to the door. "Flaminius!" I cried. "Flaminius!"

A slave running past stopped at my command. "Fetch Flaminius!" I cried. "He must bring blood! Sura must live!"

Assassin of Gor page 380

Errand Knight~~~ looking My references for transfusions ..but in the interim ..yes ..blood transfusions are given by gorean Physicians

galah{RA}~~~ thank you Master Kyoto, and it would be safe to say that goreans also had different kinds of blood types?

Lemuel~~~ ~grins at My girl and pats her head~

Kyoto~~~ Thank you jasma, that's it.

Rollo the Ax~~~ What * I * gleened from the books painted a picture of a caste that had in the far past worked VERY hard to deal with many problems and found * cures * for many.. the stabilization serums fixed MANY problems, but they also had cures for other sicknesses, operations, and such... the Gorean lifestyle lends itself to a very different list of problems than our earthly one.. but the Green caste has seemed to have stayed on top or ahead of almost every medical situation...

heavenscent{S}~~~ ~*listening......learning~*....

Errand Knight~~~ thank you jasma

Lemuel~~~ ~smiles thinking that something new is learned every day~

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~nudging head up to her Master's hand.. purring softly then whispering to Master Kyoto~

You're welcome Master..

Kyoto~~~ From what I have read, there was even a Physician who was close to curing Dar Kosis but then his lab was burned to the ground by the PKs.

Errand Knight~~~ CODE OF PHYSICIANS

1.Walk with Honour always. We are the most technologically advanced Caste on Gor, and a High Caste as well... this Honour means resonsibility.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~smiling warmly to Master Knight also.. softly~.. You're welcome Master

melina~~~ ~listens to Aall...her brain taking all this in...hoping it will be useful one day, keeping warm against Master Kyoto's leg, careful to not hurt the injured leg~

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ Aye Kyoto, I believe that was in the same book, "Assassin of Gor"

Errand Knight~~~ A Physician's responsibilities are as follows in descending order of priority:

   A.The General Health of Gor

B.The General Health of one's proximity

   C.One's Homestone

   D.The Health of an individual

If your Homestone is Port Cos, and you are in Ar, your responsibility is to the general health of Ar, War or no War. Physicians within an army are considered in proximity of their army, not the city it holds under siege.

8.One of the responsibilities of a Physician is that of advice. Any Freeperson (or slave with proper permission) may come to a Physician and seek his advice. They can expect reasonable secrecy and discretion: the Physician's Confidence. He may discuss matters of Physician's Confidence with other Physicians and only other Physicians. He must have the consent of the one asking of his advice before discussing it with anyone not of the Green. Matters of Physician's Confidence cannot be used for selfish gain.

9.Sometimes a patient will need to be kept in the care of a Physician for some extended period of time. A Physician cannot enslave a Freeperson in his care, nor can he allow the patient to be enslaved.

10.. If it is in the interest of greater health, a Physician can enact Euthanasia. An example is in the case of a fatal epidemic or plague; the killing of a violent mass-murderer is not: that is the province of Warriors.

galah{RA}~~~ is there much description about Dar Kosis and how it is spread?

galah{RA}~~~ galah remembers back years ago when someone with Dar Kosis came to the tavern, everyone gave much space to that one

Kayla~~~ Ek these are codes not of the books though but of Physcicians online....????

Errand Knight~~~

The figure seemed to shrink bakcward and grow smaller in its yellow rags. Pointing to its shadowed, concealed face, it whispered, "The Holy Disease."

That was the literal translation of Dar-Kosis - the Holy Disease - or, equivalently, the Sacred Affliction. The disease is named because it is regarded as being holy to the Priest-Kings. Accordingly, it is regarded as heresy to shed their blood. On the other hand, the Afflicted, as they are called, have little to fear from their fellow men. Their disease is so highly contagious, so invariabley devastating in its effect, and so feared on the planet that even the boldest of outlaws gives them a wide bearth. Accordingly, the Afflicted enjoy a larged amount of freedom of movement on Gor. They are, of course, warned to stay away from the habitations of men, and, if they approach too closely, they are sometimes stoned. Oddly enough, casuistically stoning the Afflicted is not regarded as a violation of the Priest-Kings' supposed injunction against shedding their blood.

p150-151, Tarnsman of Gor

Rollo the Ax~~~ ??? Kyoto... was it done by the PKs or the others of His caste ??? I thought is was a Green caste ban on research, not a PK ban ??? but hey, I can be as wrong as the next guy....LOL..

Errand Knight~~~ Kayla: of course ..they are deduced ..as You would be aware the books do nopt describe them though all are inferred

Kyoto~~~ Not sure, penny said she remembered it was the PKs... I think in retyrospect that it was the initiates because it is a holy disease.

Errand Knight~~~

Dar-Kosis Pits: As an act of charity, Initiates have arranged at various places Dar-Kosis Pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves, to be fed with food hurled downward from the backs of passing tarns. Once in a Dar-Kosis Pit, the Afflicted are not allowed to depart.

p151, Tarsman of Gor

Errand Knight~~~ The Initates destroyed the research which had been done on curing the desease ..hence the emnity between the two Castes

galah{RA}~~~ thank you Master Knight

Lemuel~~~ ~nodding~ Aye, it was the Initiates that banned research. Marlenus of Ar told them that if the PK's didn't like it the PK's could stop it themselves (or something like that).

Errand Knight~~~

Dar-kosis is a virulent, horrible, wasting disease and is similar in many ways to leprosy. Dar-kosis means Holy Disease and it is also known as the Sacred Affliction. The diseased are commonly known as Afflicted Ones. The name of the disease is rarely mentioned. The Initiates feel Dar-kosis is an instrument of the Priest-Kings to punish those who displease them. The afflicted are holy to the Priest Kings and it is heresy to shed their blood though they can be stoned. It is highly contagious and the afflicted must wear yellow robes as a mark. Many victims also periodically clack a wooden device to warn people to stay away. Initiates have arranged Dar-Kosis pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves, to be fed with food dropped by men on tarns. Once in a Pit, an Afflicted is not permitted to leave.

Because it is considered a holy disease, the Initiates will not let the Physician's Caste search for a cure. Some Physicians in Ar once tried to seek a cure, and were making good ground, when Initiates hired some men to destroy all of their research. Some Physicians still work in secret trying to seek a cure to this dreaded disease. Seeking a cure would be an excellent story-line for a Physician.

Bazi plague is a deadly, rapidly spreading disease with no known cure. Its symptoms include pustules all over the body and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes. Gieron and sajel are two drugs that can reproduce the effects of this disease. The pox is transmitted by lice. Some people are immune to it and for some it is only a temporary problem. Others die swiftly. Slaves that get the pox are usually killed.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening to Master Kyoto and her Owner.. nodding~.. aye.. and Tarl Cabot told Flaminius that he must return to his work of trying to find a cure.. at the end.. Flaminius did agree and took on a few to help him, including Vika of Treve.

Errand Knight~~~ You must remember that we are talking about the Physician's Caste that exists in the civilized cities. In some of the more barbaric areas of Gor, such as the Barrens, the Plains of Turia and the jungles near Schendi, the Caste does not exist. In those area, their medicine is much more primitive. They do not possess medical machines or advanced drugs. They rely more heavily on natural cures, using herbs and plants. The Physician's Caste though would not use such plants directly. They would create drugs from them to give by injection.

Errand Knight~~~ A common function for Physicians is to tend to wounded warriors. Drugs to prevent infection, bandages, stitches, sutures and such would likely be common. Though casts are never mentioned in the books, it seems likely that they would exist. Casts are easy to make. Surgery is performed by Physicians though advanced computer monitoring is not available to them.

Physicians rarely encounter other problems that are common to Earth. Heart attacks and cholesterol problems would be very rare. Frequent exercise and low fat diets would help prevent this. Without the massive technology and pollutants of Earth, many forms of cancer would also be rare. Psychiatrists and psychologists may not exist on Gor as most people seem quite content with their lot in life. They freely accept the Caste system and the institution of slavery. Most Goreans are very well adjusted. Overall, Goreans lead healthier lives than Earth people.

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. it helps to remember folks, that Gor has some things that ARE the same as earth... LOL. the problem of seperation of Church and State being one of them at times... LOL.. the Initiates may SEEM to be doing the work of the PKs to some, but more times than not, they only did things to make it better for THEM, ( like many religions )... the TRUE PKs, didn't give a happy urts butt about most of the crap the Initiates tried to enforce....LOL.

Kayla~~~ I wanted Others to be what You were saying was not accepted by all of the Caste though... though the list sounds fairly sound... but since the Caste is kinda like all Others as such that there is no written codes... Only the Scarlet has any thing down in writing in the books... I wish JN had gone into more details in other Castes as well

Asellus~~~ Hmmm. *listening intently*

Errand Knight~~~ *quietly hiding the key to My laboratory as My eyes search the room for any Initiate*

Lemuel~~~

"For many years," said Flaminius, "and this was even before 10,110, the year of Pa-Kur and his horde, I and others worked secretly in the Cylinder of Physicians. We devoted our time, those Ahn in the day in which we could work, to study, research, test and experiment. Unfortunately, for spite and for gold, word of our work was brought to the High Initiate, by a minor Physician discharged from our staff for incompetence. The Cylinder of Initiates demanded that the High Council of the Caste of Physicians put an end to our work, not only that it be discontinued but that our results to that date be destroyed. The Physicians, I am pleased to say, stood with us. There is little love lost between Physicians and Initiates, even as is the case between Scribes and Initiates. The Cylinder of the High Initiate then petitioned the High Council of the City to stop our work, but they, on the recommendation of Marlenus, who was then Ubar, permitted our work to continue." Flaminius laughed. "I remember Marlenus speaking to the High Initiate. Marlenus told him that either the Priest-Kings approved of our work or they did not; that if they approved, it should continue; if they did not approve, they themselves, as the Masters of Gor, would be quite powerful enough to put an end to it." -

pages 266-267, Assassin of Gor

Kayla~~~ there is mention of casts being used as treatment of broken bones...

galah{RA}~~~ and with all the sexual references made in the book, there appears to be NO STD's?

Kyoto~~~ He sort of did, Kayla, if you like Players.

But as penny pointed out to me when we were talking about this, JN was smart enough to know that he could not adequately flesh out the caste and its technology.

Errand Knight~~~ Kayla: I don't pretend to represent the caste view ..Physicians like most Castes are private Nobles with their own views ...and other than Warriors to little is said of the other Castes..so as with much of gor, there are the books and what is interpreted from the Books ..the later of course leading to as many opinions as People...but that aught to be the basis of friendly debate rather than the taking of positions which I deplore from any who are Caste Brothers or Sisters

Errand Knight~~~ no as I said no casts in the books Kayla ..but Im sure I cauld whip one up easier than design a piazza

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL...LOL.. a quote that shows once again that the Initiates while being a high caste, were VERY much like organized religions of earth...LOL.. the low castes allowed themselves to be lead around by the nose by the Initiates... religion being the * the opiate of the masses * ..LOL..but in all the books, NOBODY of high caste or any brains even LIKED the buggers....LOL..

Errand Knight~~~ The zenith of Gorean medicine has to be the stabilization serums. This serum is a life extending treatment. It was developed some five hundred years ago by the physician's caste. Its effect is an eventual, gradual transformation of certain genetic structures, resulting in indefinite cell replacement without pattern deterioration. It is given in a series of four shots. It affects all people differently and on some rare occasions doesn't work. In some rare people, it wears off after only a few hundred years and sometimes it even hastens aging. It is also capable of being transmitted to offspring. Goreans consider it the right of all people, free and slave, to have the serums. They do not deny the serums to anyone. The Priest-Kings do have better serums.

Kyoto~~~ I personally liked the way they were treated in Marauders... I got quite the chuckle from that.

Errand Knight~~~ *chuckles at Rollo*

aye ..though with the serum you would think less need for such an opiate

melina~~~ ~tries not to laugh as Another mentions the Urth reiligons

Kyoto~~~ Speaking of the serums, were they given to every single Gorean, regardless of caste or where they lived?

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. well, Kyoto... LOL. that was just one more reason that Rollo took HIS personna from that book...LOL.. My opinion of most churches is the SAME as Ivar Forkbeards....LOL..

galah{RA}~~~ slave wine was also developed by the physician caste?

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~offering softly and respectfully to Master Kyoto~.. a girl hopes this is what You're asking, Master..

I had spent eight days in the slave pens, waiting the night of the sale. I had been examined medically, in detail, and had had administered to me, while I lay bound, helplessly, a series of painful shots, the purpose of which I did not understand. They were called the stabilization serums. We were also kept under harsh discipline, close confinement and given slave training. I well recalled the lesson which was constantly enforced upon us: "The master is all. Please him fully."

"What is the meaning of the stabilization serums?" I had asked Sucha.

She had kissed me. "They will keep you much as you are," she said, "young and beautiful."

I had looked at her, startled.

"The masters, and the free, of course, if there is need of it, you must understand, are also afforded serums of stabilization," she said adding, smiling, "though they are administered to them I suppose, with somewhat more respect than they are to a slave"

"If there is need of it?" I asked.

"Yes " she said.

"Do some not require the serum'?" I asked.

"Some, said Sucha, "but these individuals are rare, and are the offspring of individuals who have had the serums."

"Why is this?" I asked.

"I do not know," said Sucha "Men differ."

The matter, I supposed, was a function of genetic subtleties, and the nature of differeng gametes. The serums of stabilization effected, it seemed, the genetic codes, perhaps altering or neutralizing certain messages of deterioration, providing, I supposed, processes in which an exchange of materials could take place while tissue and cell patterns remained relatively constant. Aging was a physical process and, as such, was susceptible to alteration by phvsical means. All physical processes are theoretically, reversible. Entropy itself is presumably a moment in a cosmic rhythm. The Physicians of Gor, it seemed, had addressed themselves to the conquest conquest of what had hitherto been a universal disease called on Gor the drying and withering disease, called on Earth, aging. Generations, of intensive research and experiementation had taken place. At last a few Physicians drawing upon the accumulated data ot hundreds of investigators, had achieved the breakthrough, devising the first primitive stabilization serums, later to be developed and exquisitely refined.

I had stood in the rage startled, trembling. "Why are serums of such value given to slaves?" I asked.

"Are they of such value?" she asked "Yes," she said, "I suppose so." She took them for granted, much as the humans of Earth might take for granted routine inoculations. She was unfamiliar with aging. The alternatie to the serums was not truly clear to her.

"Why should slaves not be given the serums?" she asked. "Do the masters not want their slaves healthy and better able to serve them?"

Slave Girl of Gor, page 282

jojo{GS}~~~ *makes a sickened face at the mention of slavewine..*

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~

A bitter root, which can either be made into a liquid contraceptive, or chewed, for the same result. The effect of the sip root, in most women is effective for three or four months. In the concentrated state, as in slave wine, developed by the caste of Physicians, the effect is almost indefinate, usually requiring a releaser for it remission, usually administered, to a slave, in what is called the breeding wine, or the second wine"

Marauders of Gor, page 23

She did not need the sip root, of course, for, as she had pointed out. she had had some within the moon, and, indeed, the effect of the sip root, in the raw state, in most women, is three or four moons. In the concentrated state, as in slave wine, developed by the caste of Physicians. the effect is almost indefinite, usually requiring a releaser for its remission, usually administered, to a slave, in what is called the breeding wine, or "second wine". When this is administered, she usually knows she has been selected for crossing with a handsome male slave.

Blood Brothers of Gor, page 319

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~nibbling on lips now.. shutting up~

galah{RA}~~~ it would seem that not only did slavewine keep a slave from becoming with child, but it also put a stop to a monthly mess? heheheeee

Rollo the Ax~~~ slave wine, was a natural need I guess...LOL.. with as much * furring * as went on, they would have had one hell of a population explosion without it...LOL...

melina~~~ ~cringes at the thought of slave wine...or the raw root...smiles brightly as she massages His leg again...her jaded eyes watch His boots as she presses full breasts agaist His leg, keeping warming for Him and a simple slave

Errand Knight~~~ Slave wine is a Gorean contraceptive, and much more effective than any Earth one. In liquid form, women drink it and are protected against conception. It is intentionally bitter when given to slaves though for free women it may be sweetened. The active ingredient in slave wine is sip root. In its raw form, sip root can also be chewed and used as a contraceptive. In this form, its effects will last for three to four moons. The Red Savages in the Barrens use sip root in its raw form. In its concentrated liquid for, the effects of slave wine now last indefinitely. This was not always the case. In the beginning of the Gor series, slave wine only lasted a month or so. But, medicine has advanced during the series and its effects are now indefinite. Despite this fact, many masters still administer slave wine to their kajirae once or twice a year. This is done out of tradition and to remind girls of their slavery. Its effects can be nullified by a releaser, an antidote called breeding or second wine. This is a smooth and sweet drink. Its active ingredient is a derivative of the teslik plant.

Lemuel~~~ ~shaking head~ Nope galah...there's a passage in "Magicians that says different. ~G~

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~*~giggles listening to Master Rollo~*~

Kyoto~~~ *Softly cursing organized Catholicism and the effect the lack of slave wine has had on my slave...*

Errand Knight~~~ Rollo: it seems there is an overabundance of capture scent as well

Lemuel~~~ ~whispering to Kyoto~ The physicians can make it so a man needn't worry about whether a slave has had her wine or not...

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~listening to galah.. chuckling~

although a girl was given slave wine.. she still would have her menstrual cycle.. just as in taking birth control pills.. it may stop contraception.. (99. whatever % it is) but a female would still menstruate.

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~*~smiles as hazels peek up to Master Kyoto~*~

Rollo the Ax~~~ But Kyoto, the point about * everybody * getting the serum ??? I have NO idea.. I mean, the Red savages ?? where would they get it ?? the Tuchuks ?? the natives of Schendi ?? Are the serums ONLY for the rich ??? or " civilized " ?? are they costly or cheap as mud ??? LOL.. I DON'T know...

Kayla~~~ stops breeding not bleeding S**

Kyoto~~~ *Blinking as I look at Lem*

I've heard of such things but thought they were myths designed to frighten teen aged boys!

galah{RA}~~~ well geeeezzzz, and what do slaves do during that time? take a week off?

Lemuel~~~

“You are just in a bad mood,” I said. Such moods were not uncommon with Marcus.

“Perhaps,” he said.

“Does Phoebe have her period?” I asked.

“No,” he said.

page 163, Magicians of Gor

melina~~~ ~giggles softly as she hears a sister speak....thinking about the old Urth days...wearing a cloth like a nappy she had heard

Errand Knight~~~ Lemuel: perhaps You and Kyoto would like to discretely visit My laboratory..though perhaps Kayla would have a more reassuring touch

Kyoto~~~ Precisely my thought, Rollo, they have the option, but where would they get it? Are there Physicians in Torvaldsland? If not, then who was it that Tarl met at the end of the book?

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~chuckling as jaz listens to galah~.. although a Master might *not* use his slave during that time.. unsure if they would.. the slave still wouldn't get time off.. she'd still be able to clean, etc..

Errand Knight~~~ galah: I hope not *grins*

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckles at Kyoto~

~looks to galah~ They please their Masters in other ways of course. ~G~

galah{RA}~~~ well sure melina....but how does one make that sound seductive? heheheheheeeee

Kyoto~~~ Not sure if I want to know, galah.

Asellus~~~ *listening*

Errand Knight~~~

"She requires the Stablization Serums," said the physician.

The guard nodded.

"They are to be administered in four shots," said the physician. He nodded to a heavy, beamed, diagonal platform in a corner of the room. The guard took me and threw me, belly down, on the platform, fastening my wrists over my head and widely apart, in leather wrist straps. He similarly secured my ankles. The physician was busying himself with fluids and a syringe before a shelf in another part of the room, laden with vials.

I screamed. The shot was painful. It was entered in the small of the back, over the left whip.

They left me secured to the table for several minutes and then the physician returned to check the shot. There had been, apparently, no unusual reaction...

We returned, similiarly, to the physician's house on the next four days. On the first day I had been examined, given some minor medicines of little consequence, and the first shot in the Stabilization Series. On the second, third and fourth day I received the concluding shots of the series. On the fifth day the physician took more samples.

"The serums are effective," he told the guard. -- p93-94, Captive of Gor

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. a whole world of questions open Kyoto... LOL.. if given the option, would EVERY person choose to live forever ??? as for the man he met ?? Torvald himself is how I read it... a man out of myth ?? or one showing just how GREAT the serum is ??? LOL..

Errand Knight~~~ *always wondered what happened to all the used rep cloths*

Kyoto~~~ I was looking for that quote the other day, EK, thank you.

galah{RA}~~~ guess that means slaves could also suffer PMS? heheeee

Kyoto~~~ EK, penny says they get washed.

*grinning*

She did it for years.

Kayla~~~ Not if they are smart girls galah *S*...

Errand Knight~~~ Serum is a life extending treatment. It was developed some five hundred years ago by the Physician's Castes of Koroba and Ar and transmitted to other Physicians at the Sardar Fairs. Aging was seen as a disease, not an inevitable fate. Centuries of research went into seeking a cure for aging. Unfortunately, this also meant that research into cures for other diseases was ignored. Many people, who were suspectible to those diseases, died during that time. As it was only the resistant that survived, this did tend to strengthen stock. Some diseases died out and others would be later cured once the Stabilization Serums were created.

The effect of the Serums is an eventual, gradual transformation of certain genetic structures, resulting in indefinite cell replacement without pattern deterioration. It affects all people differently and on some rare occasions doesn't work. In some rare people, it wears off after only a few hundred years and sometimes it even hastens aging. It is also capable of being transmitted to offspring. The initial Serums were crude but they have been carefully refined over the years. The Priest-Kings possess better Serums but they are for their use only. Goreans consider it the right of all people, free and slave, barbarian or civilized, to have the Serums. They do not deny the Serums to anyone. The Serums are given in a series of four shots, one shot a day for four days in a row. They are injected into the small of the back, over the left hip. On the fifth day, they can take a sample from you to ensure that the Serums have taken hold. Matthew Cabot is the only known person in the books to benefit from the Serums. He came to Gor over 600 years ago.

Kyoto~~~ *ROFL at Kayla!*

Errand Knight~~~ *chuckles*

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckling at Kayla's comment~

Errand Knight~~~ Menstruation was mentioned within the books. There was a passage describing a custom concerning Red Savage women. They commonly wore their hair knotted in a bun on the top of their head. But, during their menstrual period, they would wear their hair loose.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~shaking fingers.. then picking up the writing implement again~

jojo{GS}~~~ *scooting closer to Master Kyoto, just listening to the forum, letting it all sink in..*

galah{RA}~~~ **giggling and looking toward the Mistress** heheheheheeeee well, they would have to keep it bottled up inside Mistress? heheheheheheee am sure they would feel like they was gonna explode, galah KNOWS that feelin heheheheheheeee

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. I am sure that there were those of the Green caste in Torvaldsland... LOL...LOL.. we are wild and wolly, but NOT total barbarians...LOL... but there are cultures on Gor that might NEVER see any full fledged doctors.. Red hunters, red savages, Tuchuks, natives of Schendi... the list goes on and on.. even peasants out in the country side ???

Kyoto~~~ *Shuddering as I think of a tavern full of slaves with PMS... checking to see if the whips are still in place*

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ one believes the passage in Beasts of Gor was about a Free Woman..

"Her hair was worn knotted in a bun on the top of her head, like that generally of the women of the read hunters. Their hair is worn loose, interestingly, out of doors, only during their menstrual period."

Beasts of Gor, page 193

Kayla~~~ Aye Dear... Might though answer some questions about some FW actions at times... I know I could use the excuse at times *S*

galah{RA}~~~ well, would be a heck of a shock to an amourous Master to have a girl lift up her hemline and announce that shes on the rag, that can sure be a mood staler for sure heheheheheheee

Lemuel~~~ ~chuckles and nods at galah's words~ The quote from "Magicians" sure implies that.

Errand Knight~~~ Rollo it can be assumed that most nomads and noncity dwellers had medical assistance of some form available to them. Unless there were travelling Physicians on hand. We do know from Nomads of Gor that the Tuckuks had a clan a "healers". these were not Physicans of the Cylinder however. (more on this on the Boards resulting from Kyotos query)

Kyoto~~~ *Grinning at EK*

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL...LOL.. But then Lady Kayla, what excuse can Men use ??? LOL.. Guys also have * bad days *...LOL..LOL.. Maybe they should be called * Head up your ass days * ??? LOL...LOL.. and allowed to have 3-5 of them every month also ???? LOL...LOL.. LMAO... * Roaring with laughter * .....

Errand Knight~~~ geez...so long as I dont have to wear My hair in a bun

Kyoto~~~ I second the motion, Rollo... all in favor of men having 3-5 "heads up our asses" days, respond "Aye".

Lemuel~~~ AYE!

galah{RA}~~~ these would be 3-5 days in a row? or spread throughout the month whenever Master feels like it? heheheheeee

Lemuel~~~ ~thinking briefly about Robin Williams joke about PK's only giving men enough blood to run one thing at a time~

Caelum_RavenCrest~~~ AYE!

Rollo the Ax~~~ Yes, EK... it could also perhaps be explained away by saying that those cultures relayed on the inherited immunity factor also... their ancestors had the drug, and now the off spring are naturally long lived...?????

Kayla~~~ I think maybe that should be a week but then I am only a Woman and so My opinion should not count *S* I would vote for the days being named... any day ending with a "Y" ~grinning under the veil~

Errand Knight~~~ *raising My hand wondering how Im gunna cut down down to 3-5 head up My arse days*

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. AYE... been there, done that...LOL.. 3-5 days... but I reserve the right to have it happen whenever * I * want it to explain My bad moods, like some women, Okay ??? LOL...LOL.. know some ladies that must have had 23 day periods EVERY month....LOL.. but then I've know guys that never saw the sun either...LOL.. cause they head has never out of their butt....LOL..

Kayla~~~ Just kidding My Men Friends... Just kidding....

melina~~~ thinks that PMS is no excuse...but then what a slave thinks is nil

Kayla~~~ not for a slave melina you are right *ss*...

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. No offense taken, Kayla... anybody too thick skinned to laugh at themselves is going to have to learn to live with it...LOL...LOL.. hell, when I need a good laugh, I just go to the mirror....LOL...LOL..

galah{RA}~~~ might a girl please ask one more lil question to the healers present?

Rollo the Ax~~~ galah, if one or more of the Healers wants to answer, it is okay...if not, that is okay too...LOL.

galah{RA}~~~ galah just wonders if there was ever any mention of missing limbs, with the fighting and all that warriors do, was there peg legs and hook arms and such?

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~wrinkles her nose hearing words of blood and missing limbs~

galah{RA}~~~ **giggles toward shirin and her funny face shes making** hey sis, is wondering something and being curious the same thing? heheheheheheeee

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~giggles at galah~ shirin don't think so, hehehehe

Kayla~~~ ~looking to Lemuel and jasma~ I think there was a missing hand in one book... ~trying hard to remember~

Lemuel~~~ ~shrugs at Kayla~ After forgetting about the transfusions I wouldn't trust My memory regarding such things. ~S~

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL...LOL.. Looking at My galah and wondering * Where the hell does the girl come up with these???? ) LOL...LOL.. Well, I don't remember exactly any quotes about peg legs or * captain Hook * LOL... but I'll bet somebody somewhere will pull one out of a hat...LOL.

jasma{LB}GSFG~~~ ~she thinks as well on the question asked.. ~

this one doesn't remember there being mention of missing limbs, galah.. but she will try to find out within the next few days..

Errand Knight~~~ not that I recall

galah{RA}~~~ it's not important question....just seemed it would have to be sooo, for warriors hurt each other even with being careful when sparring, if it was a real fight, a warrior would not hesitate to chop something off?

Heroes in the books

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL.. LOL.. Okay, okay... lets get another topic going... okay ??? anybody have one ???

Rollo the Ax~~~ Okay.. here is a quick topic.. Why did Tarl Cabot, his dad Mathew, and other men from earth like Jason Marshel become * heros ?? their strength ?? their brains ?? or because Mr Norman wanted earth guys to feel good about themselves ??? LOL.

melina~~~ ~giggles as she thinks of a reply..but keeps very quiet

Kyoto~~~ Great question... I suppose it's just like the Mars book... ohhh *wracking my brain as I try to think of the guys name*

Lemuel~~~ ~S~ I'd say the last one. If a whiney whimp like Jason Marshall can claw his way up to being a man then the rest of the men of earth should be able to.

shirin{SholGar}~~~ shirin picks the last ~smiles~ there were books written about earth guys by an earth guy, why not

Lemuel~~~ John Carter?

Kyoto~~~ Thank you, Lem. And penny is agreeing with you about Marshall, the entire time she read the books, she wanted to smack him silly.

Rollo the Ax~~~ John Carter on Barsoom ???

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~nods~ exactly Master Lemuel, tho shirin is ony a bit over half way thru book 14, but enjoying it so far, had a good chuckle about the FW and how they acted and fighting over a silk slave ~grins~

Lemuel~~~ ~grins at shirin~

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~winks to penny~ he was quite the pussy at times, hehehehehe

Kyoto~~~ Think about it though, during the books, the men of Earth were constantly put down as being too weak to handle a slave, to put a woman in her proper place... and then along comes Tarl Cabot, who fights off his "weak side" and becomes not only a great warrior but an exceedingly strong Master.

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. Okay, in the books it explains that Gor is a fraction smaller than earth, so gravity is a liitle less... that would explain why an earth guy would be a little stronger... for a while... but his muscles would adjust after a while.. just like any born Gorean would only have as much muscle as he built up...

Lemuel~~~ ~nods~ I think that JN points out in the books that it is mostly cultural.

Kyoto~~~ Correct, Rollo, but it seemed that Tarl kept that great strength through the whole series... was it a result of the serums?

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~nods listening to Master Kyoto~ yes Master, too, John Norman needed to relly set the stage and show how different Men of Gor were from those on earth, and it's true, most Men are weak, ~grins, glancing about~ present Company excluded

Kyoto~~~ *Flexing both my physical and mental muscles for shirin*

shirin{SholGar}~~~ shirin would tend to think that gorean Men had to stay fitter and "work out" more

Kyoto~~~ Well, there were some rather corpulent merchants mentioned, shirin.

Rollo the Ax~~~ LOL..LOL.. On the WHY Mr Norman wrote the books the way he did ??? Would ANY of Us be here if he had made the guys a bunch of pansies??? Men OR women ??? If you want SNAGS, either go to the coffee shop, the flower shop, or the butcher....LOL...LOL.. ( in Oz, sausages are called snags to My Yank friends...LOL. )

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~*~chuckles and smiles pretty to Master Kyoto, feeling weak as He shows off~*~ mmmmmmmmmm

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~nods~ well yes You are correct again, Master Kyoto

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ok, shot shirin's theory....

Rollo the Ax~~~ I think that JN shows that it has VERY cultural.. remember that the * civilized * cities were very Roman in nature, and the men mostly of that ethnic background... We Torvaldslanders were like Vikings, Germanic/Norse genes, so bigger than Romans... etc. etc.

Rollo the Ax~~~ FAT merchants, piss weak men, ugly women... Gor has then ALL... just not as heros of JNs books....LOL..LOL..

shirin{SholGar}~~~ that gorean Men worked out more and were more in shape than those on earth...but yet, They would of had to, to defend Themselves on such a harsh planet...wouldn't They?

shirin{SholGar}~~~ ~*~chuckles~*~ tis true Master Rollo...
