Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 19:57:28 pm CST

got a whisper with a topic and now i´m busy for the next half an hour to read it *chuckles at the Lady*

Lita, Physician 19:59:15 pm CST

I don't make these things up, Jarl! Just swipe 'em from another place when I think they are good.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:00:08 pm CST

*snickers at Jarl Thorrn and Mistress Lita*

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:02:34 pm CST

I know that You don´t make up things Lita. The typing tells me *big grin*

I´m glad that YOu often bring those topics from that other place, they often make good topics for the discussions in forums *smile*

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:04:08 pm CST

*hears Jarl Thorrn* Indeed, this one would have a hard time coming up with a topic off the top of her head.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:04:12 pm CST

Grabs the fur tossed from My friend Shadowhawk and sits down on it to display the Questions of the topic first. It will be helpfull to know them already while reading the quotes related.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:05:06 pm CST

Declares the forum of tonight open and here are some

The Importance of a "Job"

Quotes For This Week

"The test of a society is perhaps not its conformance or nonconformance to principles but the nature and human prosperity of its members. Let each look about himself and judge for himself the success of his own society. Man lives confused in the ruins of ideologies. Perhaps he will someday emerge from the caves and pens of his past. That would be a beautiful day to see. There would be a sunlit world waiting for him." (Slave Girl of Gor,p.212) "The Wagon Peoples, as might be expected, have a large and complex oral literature. This is kept by and occasionally, in parts, recited by the Camp Singers. They do not have castes, as Goreans tend to think of them. For example, every male of the Wagon Peoples is expected to be a warrior, to be able to ride, to be able to hunt, to care for the bosk, and so on. When I speak of Year Keepers and Singers it must be understood that these are not, for the Wagon Peoples, castes, but more like roles, subsidiary to their main functions, which are those of the war, herding and the hunt. They do have, however, certain clans, not castes, which specialize in certain matters, for example, the clan of healers, leather workers, salt hunters, and so on. I have already mentioned the clan of torturers. The members of these clans, however, like the Year Keepers and Singers, are all expected, first and foremost, to be, as it is said, of the wagons namely to follow, tend and protect the bosk, to be superb in the saddle, and to be skilled with the weapons of both the hunt and war."

Nomads of Gor Page 12

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:08:41 pm CST

Part 2

"Whereas caste membership is commonly connected with the practice of an occupation, such as agriculture, or commerce, or war, there can be, of course, caste members who are not engaged in caste work and individuals who do certain forms of work who are not members of that caste commonly associated with such work. Caste, commonly, though not invariably, is a matter of birth. One may, too, be received into a caste by investment. Normally mating takes place among caste members, but if the mating is of mixed caste, the woman may elect to retain caste, which is commonly done, or be received into the caste of the male companion. Caste membership of the children born of such a union is a function of the caste of the father. Similar considerations, in certain cities, hold of citizenship. Caste is important to Goreans in a way that is difficult for members of a non-caste society to understand. Though there are doubtless difficulties involved with caste structure the caste situation lends an individual identity and pride, allies him with thousands of caste brothers, and provides him with various opportunities and services. Recreation on Gor is often associated with caste, and tournaments and entertainments. Similarly, most public charity on Gor is administered through caste structure. The caste system is not inflexible and there are opportunities for altering caste, but men seldom avail themselves of them; they take great pride in their castes often comparing others' castes unfavorably to their own; a Gorean's caste, by the time he reaches adulthood, seems to have become a part of his very blood and being; the average Gorean would no more think of altering caste than the average man of Earth would of altering his citizenship, from, say, American to Russian, or French to Chinese.........

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:09:07 pm CST

Part 3

The caste structure, in spite of its many defects, doubtless contributes to the stability of Gorean society, a society in which the individual has a place, in which his work is respected, and in which he can plan intelligently with respect to the future. The clan structures are kinship groups. They function, on the whole, given mating practices, within the caste structure, but they are not identical to it. For example, in a given clan there may be, though often are not, individuals of different castes. Many Goreans think of the clan as a kinship group within a caste. For most practical purposes they are correct. At least it seldom does much harm to regard the matter this way. Clans, because of practical limitations on mobility, are usually associated, substantially, with a given city; the caste, on the other hand, is trans-municipal or inter-municipal." Slave Girl of Gor Page 212

ShadowHawk 20:08:37 pm CST

Hmmmm.. I take it by the word "Job", is to mean our Castes? or as in my case, My clan?

Lita, Physician 20:12:05 pm CST

In My case, practicing My Caste, gives Me opportunities for role-play that most Free Women do not have.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:13:54 pm CST

The job as i udnerstand it ShadowHawk is what One does, the things which occupy you in your day and to earn your living respective snatch from others what they earened for their living.

ShadowHawk 20:15:44 pm CST

1) How did you decide what caste/guild/clan your character would be?

I didn't, I attended a Gorean Night discussion at a BDSM room I went too. I had been interested and the discussion even perked my interest more. From there I spoke to the Man and his girl about their camp, they invited me to visit. They were Paravaci of the Wagon People, that is where I first started 13 years ago. There are no castes but clans, I became Clan of the Hunter, BUT I mostly spent most time time dealing with the Outriders since I were Captain of the Outriders as well.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:16:35 pm CST

Nods to the Lady.

The possibilities for roleplay are a bit limited for Free Women when not having a kind of "job" to let them join in the actions.

Lita, Physician 20:17:57 pm CST

So did You choose to be of the Clan of the Hunter? Or was it assiogned to You by the Home You went to?

ShadowHawk 20:19:29 pm CST

2) How does actively practicing your "Job" contribute to and strengthen your roleplay?

Hmmm, having been a hunter and in military, I have been able to bring to my role play a very believable character with phrases that are used in the military OR give a scene that had occurred when out hunting for deer or quail or whatever I have in rt... as for the ass in my character.. well, I am just an open minded very opinionated man... lol

ShadowHawk 20:21:17 pm CST

I chose it Lita, having hunted all my life, I know nothing of metal smithing or carpentry or other things that are done within camp... WHICH makes it harder for me here since every day things for where I am used to, does not happen here

Lita, Physician 20:23:20 pm CST

Could You not hunt for the Tavern, and keep it supplied with meat?

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:24:29 pm CST

*hears Mistress Lita, and thinks that is a good idea*

ShadowHawk 20:24:39 pm CST

3) What part do slaves play in the jobs of the free?

the slave, well MY slave plays a big part in my rping, she carries much like a pack mule for me.. lol... *goosing shuri*.. seriously, no the kaiila carries my "things", but she fetches, carries the water bags, follows behind in 'case' I need toss her at any head strong urts who want to attack me... lol.. *winking to her*...

a slaves role is only limited by the imagination of her Master or Mistress... whatever I am doing at time I add her to my rp or why would I have her as mine? there is so much more than her just bringing me a drink or me bending her over low table...

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:24:56 pm CST

I respect the castes of the tool wokers and boast to have some skills in the some of them, as a hobby and sparetime craftsmen but none of them atrracts Me so much that i´d wish to have that as job.

So i ended up in what i´m ... nordish by nature and by birth i enjoy to be a viking resp a Jarl of the North.

aatira {Dak} 20:25:34 pm CST

There are some urts that need to be hunted.... *soft smile*

Lita, Physician 20:25:51 pm CST

shuri, there is a question on how slaves contribute to the practice of a caste. You might try to think how you as a slave can help your Master in the practice of His Caste or Clan

ShadowHawk 20:27:06 pm CST

I could, aye Lita.. however, returning to question... even tho we had clans, we did not only do the work of our clan.. if a wood worker were repairing the wheels of our wagons, myself and others were there to help as well.. with either muscle or 'weigh'.. in other words my fat ass sitting on the leverage bar to lift the wagon... lol

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:27:25 pm CST

shuri, the slaves can tell why they chose to be of the "caste" of slaves and not of the Free Women *s*

*hopes not to get stoned for using the word caste in respect to slaves and hopes that some enjoy some irony in such things*

Dak 20:28:10 pm CST

I assumed you meant the caste of their Master, *smiles*

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:28:49 pm CST

*Squeaks at the goosing, and fake pouts about being tossed to urts, changing to a slow grin at the next words*

Lita, Physician 20:30:04 pm CST

aatira brings up another possibility, Shadow Hawk! this place is sorely bedeviled by urts, and I have often begged the Captains to organize a massive urt hunt! You could probably do that! *LOL*

Dak 20:31:37 pm CST

not all slaves choose it, *smiles*

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 20:31:52 pm CST

she could be nothing else my Master...she is a slave because she just is.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:32:29 pm CST

*grins hearing Jarl Thorrn's words.*

Well when one was brought to Gor is was as a slave girl and she was trained as such. she still doesn't know enough about the World of Gor to play a free woman, but she is endevouring to learn more about it so she can offer more to roleplay in whatever part she plays.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:32:46 pm CST

Your job skills are muchly required Shadowhawk.

Lita, Physician 20:32:59 pm CST

Dak, in a way they do. Because by the books, a Free is supposed to choose death over slavery. So if they are enslaved, then they have chosen it.

ShadowHawk 20:33:32 pm CST

By the by, I were not a Captain, just used that word to explain.. we were known as Commanders.. I were Commander of a 1000 so I had my own wagon and bosks while Commanders of less stayed among their Outriders

Dak 20:34:07 pm CST

as I understand it, it was only Warriors that were to choose death over slavery, *smiles*

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:34:12 pm CST

*nods to Mistress Lita* HHmm, that is an interesting way to look at it.

ShadowHawk 20:35:23 pm CST

4) What did you do to learn the skills of your job and is it important to know what you're doing in your job in roleplay?

I answered this in another post.. *smiles, looking around*.. alright Dak, Kazak.. let us hear about your choices...

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:37:27 pm CST

Browsing the questions i must say that the job of a northern Jarl requires skills in all topics of life, a kind of allrounder. I like that and it helps to do the role play as a Master in Gor.

OriginalSandman_Builder/ Sr. Captain of GS 20:37:49 pm CST

walking in silently nodding to each so as not to disturb the discussion

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:38:05 pm CST

*whispers* What are Outriders Master?

ShadowHawk 20:38:07 pm CST

Plus, I have expanded from hunting to skinning as well.. skinning my own kill using what I can for camp... although I do not do that in rt, I have read up and studied a lot on the matter

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:40:25 pm CST

Jarl Thorrn, what does being a Jarl of North entail? What is it like in the Northern region of Gor?

ShadowHawk 20:40:46 pm CST

Outriders are what are known as Guards here... although every man is a warrior among the Wagon People and Alars, they have to belong to clan for camp to work.. they do not fight all the time, need herders, leather makers, physicians *nodding to Lita*.. woodsman, metal smiths, I believe there are 9 in all, well three more which are rare these days.. one of those three are the scarrers(sp)

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:41:18 pm CST

Lita, in the books i don´t recall any Free Woman who chose death over slavery.

All FW in such a situation declared eagerly that they are slaves by nature and were just hiding it till now.

Tal Captain.

*S*

ShadowHawk 20:42:02 pm CST

*chuckling goosing shuri again*.. he were referring to me girl.. lol.. since I have been from the north for these past 4 years

*returning nod to Sandman*

Lita, Physician 20:42:17 pm CST

Yes. I know, Jarl Thorrn.

Dak 20:42:25 pm CST

I was originally began as a Builder, but do to the fact of so many overbearing Warrior Masters, I kind of morphed into a Warrior.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:43:04 pm CST

So among those of the Wagon Peoples, every Free man is a warrior, plus they have an additional skill that contributes to everyday life, Master?

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:43:14 pm CST

smiles at My slave and nods

you are slave by nature, not much to choose for you ... and now it is too late anyways, the collar is on your neck *tugs at it*

Lita, Physician 20:43:34 pm CST

Don't forget the Clan of Torturers, Shadow Hawk

ShadowHawk 20:43:58 pm CST

aye.. slaves are required to assist but the Free as should be the case of any Free... makes camp work as the Free here make this Tavern work

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:44:12 pm CST

*snorts softly hearing Jarl Thorrn about Free women and slavery*

ShadowHawk 20:44:51 pm CST

well that is the same clan Lita.. since they are very rare, I call them scarrers as their trade is used often.. scarring the men among the wagon people or the baby boys at birth among the Alars

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:45:40 pm CST

*Squeaks at the goosing, wiggling His lap, that is the second mark made down the paper while she has been scribing.*

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:46:14 pm CST

*grins hearing Master Dak*

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:47:38 pm CST

Being from the north means to be out of big cities, living in a country style and take care of all the needs one has by oneself instead of going to the streets of .... and buy or order things.

The Jarl is the head of His own community and is responsible for His affairs

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:48:47 pm CST

OOhhh......so that is why They are called scarrers....

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:50:21 pm CST

Jarl Thorrn....and the slaves of the Northerns are called bondsmaids, correct? They also have a less formal serving style than silk girls? If this one remember right, they also look on silk girls and pampered?

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 20:51:14 pm CST

babies? ~shocked~ it is different than Earth...she thinks scars are earned there...sort of badges of honor

ShadowHawk 20:51:52 pm CST

nay shuri, Lita is correct.. they are the Clan of Torturers.. and to become one it is required for one to have time and put in effort as an apprentice til they have proven they can be a Torturer.. you just do not say.. OK, I am a Torturer like you would a hunter or warrior or any other castes or clans in Gor.. the person behind character is required to be in rt effort as well... do some serious studying and testing..then become registered once he proves and is awarded the Clan

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 20:52:37 pm CST

yes shuri...but snowrose is happy to wear the silks and not freeze her buns off all the time

ShadowHawk 20:53:40 pm CST

rose a baby boy at birth is given two scars, one on both cheeks..

If the child is healthy, the father will proudly lift the child up into the air to publicly claim the child as his own. Male newborns receive a single, oblique cut on each cheek before they receive any milk. "It must learn to endure wounds before it receives the nourishment of milk." (Mercenaries of Gor, p.47)

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:53:56 pm CST

*giggles and winks to mistress snowrose* This one can definitely understand that......

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 20:55:42 pm CST

ohhh Master...snowrose could not be present for that.

ShadowHawk 20:56:03 pm CST

they are different shuri..

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 20:56:26 pm CST

you got that right shuri, the northern slave girls are called bondmaids and look down at the pampered silk slaves of the south because they are so weak.

Life in the north is harder, the cold of the climate and roughness of the land doesn´t spoil the inhabitants.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 20:57:41 pm CST

*grins to snowrose* Thinks that is a lot less traumatic than Earth's custom of circumcision.*

ShadowHawk 20:57:53 pm CST

excuse me, it is time for this one to go.. rt is calling.. be well all! *hugging shuri to me, kissing her cheek then giving her a swift swat to tush*.. be good girl and you know what I mean.. lol.. *winks then fades*

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 20:58:21 pm CST

again, could not be present. ~shudders~

Lita, Physician 20:58:45 pm CST

shuri, Assassins are a Caste, not a Clan I don't believe there are Assassins among the Wagon Peoples.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:00:33 pm CST

you got that right shuri, the northern slave girls are called bondmaids and look down at the pampered silk slaves of the south because they are so waek.

Life in the north is harder, the cold of the climate and roughness of the land doesn´t spoil the inhabitants.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:00:56 pm CST

Ah....*hearing Mistress Lita* Yes, this one may be confusing Caste and Clan. First time Master has described the difference with the Wagon People.

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 21:03:57 pm CST

but she does enjoy sometimes serving in the Northern style at times...at festival, or when it gets very crowded and we can't get Everyone served in due time

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:04:51 pm CST

growls at the urts which forced Me to resend that psoting.

Those northern circumstances make life of the Torvaldslanders less formal than life in the south.

There are basic rules and regulations of life and society but they are not so refined and strict in details.

I enjoy that more, have a basic line and be free for alterations in some range.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:07:48 pm CST

*laughs hearing mistress snowrose* Yes, the Northern way of serving is much more condusive for serving lots of people at the same time.

Dak 21:10:36 pm CST

I often have My girls serve several at a time when there are not enough slaves in the tavern !

OriginalSandman_Builder/ Sr. Captain of GS 21:12:28 pm CST

rising RT calls.. thank you for conducting Forum Dak,, thank you to the scribes,, and Happy Holidays to all here

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:12:58 pm CST

Serving several at a time?

Wondering how a paralel serving goes, i can only imagine serial services.

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 21:13:54 pm CST

yes it is a good idea Master Dak...and gives the slaves a chance to flirt with many...always a plus for us

Dak 21:15:42 pm CST

well, I have several times ha My girl serve others in the same serve, that's why there are trays in the servery

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:15:48 pm CST

*laughs hearing Jarl Thorrn.* Well the girl's just carry pitchers of paga or ka-la-na and bring several serving cups with them. Platters of food instead serving each Master or Mistress individually.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:18:39 pm CST

A kind of northern style of service, with pitchers and trays.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:21:25 pm CST

A kind of beergarden service *grin*

Dak 21:23:11 pm CST

aye, but it does get Patrons served quicker , *smiles* when she return she goes to each patron doing a proper delivry, the moves to the next, *smile*

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 21:27:58 pm CST

Thank You for leading my Master

thank you for scribing shuri...

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:29:21 pm CST

Looks at My gilr ... did she just declare the Forum as closed?

Didn´t know that the slaves lead the forum.

*swats her cute ass roughly*

snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure~GS~fg 21:30:13 pm CST

ohhh she begs forgiveness my Master...been fg too long

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:30:41 pm CST

*giggles softly hearing Jarl Thorrn* This one thinks mistress snowrose has had a long and difficult week Jarl Thorrn.

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:35:45 pm CST

*smiles* This one wishes A/all well. *Gathering her things and hugging them to her as she rises.*

Oh.....*raises an eyebrow* Will there be forums next Sunday? So close to Christmas Eve?

Dak 21:37:00 pm CST

I think the forums should be cancelled ill after the 1st of the year !

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:38:15 pm CST

Wwe could discuss christmas customs and habits on Gor ... or other religious events on Gor.

Dak 21:40:09 pm CST

I thought that was more or less what the trips to the Sardar were for, *smiles*

shuri {ShadowHawk} 21:40:34 pm CST

*smiles to Jarl Thorrn* It is not what we discuss, but that probably few if any will show up.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:42:13 pm CST

Something like that Dak.

The Sardar is mostly merchandise, tarding, kaissa and such but also an initiation rite for young Goreans.

Could be interesting to summarize them in a discussion.

Jarl Thorrn - Advisor 21:43:40 pm CST

Cancelling the events for next week is reasonable.
