HELPING NEW PEOPLE

Xertog 19:23:14 pm CDT

Lets get the forum started. Welcome to the Gorean Shores weekly forum. The Forum Protocols and Rules can be found here: angelfire.com/vt/goreanshores/gsinfo/forumprotocols.html

Please add your name by using the ‘Console’ if you haven’t done so yet. Also please keep greetings, role play and other chit chat to whispers. All the extra unnecessary posts makes the job of the scribes a lot harder. I appreciate that a log of these forums is kept. The people that do the work are volunteers. Lets not abuse their good will and hard work by making things harder for them.

Laroona 19:24:55 pm CDT

adding to Xertog's request The average pages saved and edited, are between 20 and 30 pages every week; unedited they average over 30 pages!

Xertog 19:27:39 pm CDT

TOPIC  We are getting new people into GS, How do we go about helping them with our rules and protocols? Both Free and slave.

Loki 19:28:25 pm CDT i Myself have whispered on occasion when things need correcting....

Ulrich 19:28:51 pm CDT Well it seems logical that the first thing to do is give them a link to the website with all of the protocols, rules and regulations.

And of course answer any questions they may have.

Xertog 19:29:47 pm CDT This is an important topic. All chat rooms seem to have a tendency to become cliquey. I hope everyone remembers that we were all new here at some time and that we borrow from the simple wisdom of the golden rule and apply it to how we treat new people.

That being said, last week we had some new person in here. I think she went by the name lildove. She abused the hospitality shown her. I think her only purpose for coming to the forum was to stir up shit and create some drama. There is no reason we should tolerate rude obnoxious people.

blckrose{Zor} 19:30:15 pm CDT rose appreciates a whisper when she has done something in error

Laroona 19:30:38 pm CDT listening to the topic after greeting and welcoming it is usual for me to show them the GS information site.... also sometimes point them to Luthers essay on Port Kar if they are a FW I often also show them Luthers scrolls regarding FW in Port Kar if slave I give both the information site and links to the slave pages...

I always offer to help any

Laroona 19:32:09 pm CDT I will often whisper to any who ask.... and I am always open to whispers from any

LOL yes Xertog she was just here to stir up trouble yet we showed her more than reasonable courtesy

desiree {Drusus} 19:33:26 pm CDT des believes that those people that come in and are sincere about learning about Gor should be given some leeway - time to learn...and should feel comfortable to ask questions...remembering the first time she came into GS and she was terrified...afraid to say anything for fear of making a mistake!

Ulrich 19:34:52 pm CDT It's been my experience that most are patient with new people, and are as helpful as possible.

Laroona 19:35:14 pm CDT of course any slaves entering I also offer the O collar this gives them the opportunity to observe before making a committment

another thing I often advise some females who are undecided to enter first as a FW then if they want to be slave it fits to the GS protocols *S*

Laroona 19:36:07 pm CDT dessiree I think that escapes us at times is we all began somewhere in GS.... *S*

OriginalSandman_Builder/Captain of GS 19:36:32 pm CDT I usually try to offer friendly advice in whispers

Xertog 19:36:49 pm CDT Now for the book thumpers amongst us you may say that as per the books the word stranger and enemy are the same in Gorean. This is repeated often through the books.

"The Gorean is suspicious of the stranger, particularly in the vicinity of his native walls. Indeed, in Gorean the same word is used for both stranger and enemy." Outlaw of Gor, page 49

But we are in Port Kar and Port Kar has some things about it that are different and unique from the rest of Gor. Here is a good quote from the book Raiders:

I was in the delta of the Vosk, and making my way to the city of Port Kar, which alone of Gorean cities commonly welcomes strangers , RAIDERS OF GOR, Page 6

From Luther’s scrolls: Port Kar has a number of other interesting quirks. It is one of the few cities on Gor that welcomes strangers. Port Kar will generally accept anyone into their city and does not immediately treat them as an enemy. Thus, it is a good refuge for outcasts from other cities. This may possibly change in the future due to the fact the city now possesses a Home Stone. The honor of the Home Stone may dictate that the city becomes more discrimanate in who they permit entrance into their city. members.aol.com/UbarLuther/Scroll41.html

From time to time the question comes up why GS operate in the time before Port Kar has a homestone. This is the reason it has remained that way.

Laroona 19:37:31 pm CDT Captain Sandman I find whispering saves face for many *S*

but those unwilling to learn well I am not wasting my time or effort on them ...

Nerius 19:38:54 pm CDT I know I have been welcomed openly and I do like that about this home...Most are helpful in pointing things out

Nerius 19:39:37 pm CDT as has piona I might add....and we both appreciate that

Laroona 19:39:58 pm CDT of late are the switchers and gamers that are entering if they are genuine why do they ignore the rules given to them often?

how do we treat those?

Nerius 19:41:43 pm CDT ignore I would think...and I will make use of that feature in the future...especially after recent events

desiree {Drusus} 19:42:24 pm CDT those that are sincere and truly have a desire to learn will oftentimes sit back and observe to learn more of Gor and they will also ask questions...

Those that refuse to abide by the rules of GS are most likely gamers..and have no desire but to come in and cause problems...

Laroona 19:44:06 pm CDT ignoring is one thing but if they come and look only for cyber sex and interrupt r/p by demanding white silks serve them or any slave serve ? do we ignore? do we offer more help? or do we just tell them to run away?

Ulrich 19:44:37 pm CDT *grumbling* wish Sandman would fix that trap door..

Some may try to hard, I would try to cut them a LITTLE slack, but if they continue and refuse to straighten up and fly right, well as Nerius said, the ignore button is handy

Xertog 19:45:20 pm CDT Eventually Gary will set us up with some Admin powers to better deal with disruptive people. Until we have the ignore feature. New people should be shown respect and hospitality until they abuse it.

Xertog 19:45:20 pm CDT Eventually Gary will set us up with some Admin powers to better deal with disruptive people. Until we have the ignore feature. New people should be shown respect and hospitality until they abuse it.

OriginalSandman_Builder/Captain of GS 19:45:47 pm CDT Laroona my feeling is we offer them help initially ,, but if they are clearly up to no good,, then show them the door,, or the blade

Cavy 19:46:10 pm CDT agrees with Laroona.....I have come here and spent nearly an hour explaining to One....then coming in the next time and having to do it again to the same One

desiree {Drusus} 19:46:22 pm CDT sometimes people who come in and become disruptive just have a desire to be paid attention...to ignore them would take away their power to be disruptive...

Laroona 19:46:43 pm CDT Xertog they are continually abusing it... how can one be collaring a slave and having to ward off cyber hounds during the collaring process.... GS is not a cyber cafe last I heard

Laroona 19:47:37 pm CDT Cavy yes you and I spend a good ahn talking to one heee I think I had that one at least 3 times LOL

Laroona 19:48:46 pm CDT Captain Sandman the Piazza is a no kill zone so FW are left to deal with them we cannot post a FM? heeee as much as I have felt like it of late....

Xertog 19:50:34 pm CDT Laroona there is no set rules on such things. We have to use common sense and our own judgment. Eventually the assholes show themselves for what they are. Some hide it better then others.

Laroona 19:50:59 pm CDT What if during r/p it is a pledged patron interrupting the scene? do we ignore them too?

OriginalSandman_Builder/Captain of GS 19:52:23 pm CDT smiles to Laroona ,, ignore does seem to work wonders with the jerks no matter what sort of chat site,, troublemakers are in my experience attention seekers ,, take away the attention and there is nothing left to keep them around

shadow{Ulrich}~t 19:53:48 pm CDT shadow is curious.. if one is a known gamer what is the correct protocol?

Laroona 19:54:04 pm CDT to a degree I agree Captain Sandman

but how can we ignore a pledged FM. carrying on like an idiot?

Cavy 19:55:00 pm CDT listens for the answer to Laroonas question

Xertog 19:55:00 pm CDT Laroona I would suggest sending the person a whisper and try and clue them in. C&P every thing and if it continues send the C&P to the Council.

Nerius 19:55:15 pm CDT isnt that where the council comes in?

Laroona 19:55:34 pm CDT Captain Xertog I have been C&Ping my little fingers off their bones LOL

Xertog 19:57:38 pm CDT Then it sounds like you have a large e mail to send the Council Laroona.

blckrose{Zor} 20:01:34 pm CDT in roses eyes, a girl is expected to answer for her actions to her Master or any Master she has done wrong to, rose feels that a FM/FW should have to answer to the Council if They were found breaking the rules

Laroona 20:02:38 pm CDT well said rose *S*

Nerius 20:03:35 pm CDT aye rose I agree

 FESTIVAL FEEDBACK

Xertog 20:02:45 pm CDT OK new topic..

We had a festival this weekend. How about some feed back.. What did you like? Didn't like? What would you liked changed next time around?

Ulrich 20:04:17 pm CDT One thing I would change is to have it on a weekend I could attend. *L*

OriginalSandman_Builder/Captain of GS 20:04:31 pm CDT smiles i thought the meat toss was a hoot ,, much better than I expected

daria{GS} 20:04:45 pm CDT i missed it, grumbles

Laroona 20:05:28 pm CDT I would have liked to see more participants maybe the timing was wrong....

also I think that some entering and expecting personal serves was rude as the slaves went to a lot of bother preparing platters...

blckrose{Zor} 20:05:32 pm CDT nods in agreement with Master Ulrich as roses RT wouldn't allow her to be here

Xertog 20:08:02 pm CDT This was the fourth one I have organized. I think I have had my fill of it. I think it could use some new blood at the helm with a fresh perspective.

Ulrich if you run it next time you can pick the date.. lol

Deirdre~Physician & Companion of Sandman 20:08:35 pm CDT Yes....the meat toss was great.....and the Oar Dance was a hoot to watch.

Ulrich 20:10:12 pm CDT lol I'll keep that in mind Captain.

Xertog 20:12:04 pm CDT Typically we hold them twice a year. Early December would be the next one. If there are events that people enjoyed at the festival we don't have to wait till the next festival to do them.. The meat toss and Oar Dance can be done on there own with out a festival.

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:13:25 pm CDT jesse thinks it would be good to have some events held once in a while outside of festivals... it gives us all something to do besides serving... drinking.... and... other things...

Xertog 20:15:55 pm CDT Some things that were scheduled never happened, like the scavenger hunt. When it was suggested at a forum it got a lot of good feed back from people. But not one person did it.

Laroona 20:16:56 pm CDT Back from RT another thing is as most of the time FW judge dances and as we are rarely ever in the tavern I do not see why slaves need to hold back on a dance just for the Festival.. I would therefore think if they have a dance they like then why not submit that... why have to hold back *S*

Ulrich 20:16:59 pm CDT As I recall, the scavenger hunt was supposed to help promote the festival. How was the attendance from outside GS?

zoya{GS}~t 20:18:05 pm CDT zoya read over the scavenger hunt and at first it sounds very good and fun but at the same time it just sounded like extensive work and time a girl just didn't have

zoya{GS}~t 20:18:42 pm CDT and zoya doesn't travel ~soft smiles~

Laroona 20:19:27 pm CDT maybe there could be some scavenger hunt within GS as a fun event like say looking for old paga socks....

Xertog 20:20:41 pm CDT Ulrich Blade is the only one from out side GS that I recall. I was counting on the scavenger hunt to promote it. So we really had no out side promotion besides a post on the JAG board.

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:21:49 pm CDT perhaps thats' something that could be done on the role play board Mistress.... we've all often said how we need more role play around... and it has never really gotten off the ground till recently... and jesse knows how scary it can be to try something you've never done.. perhaps even for the Free.. but sometimes you've just got to jump in and do it...

jesse encourages more to join in

Nerius 20:22:11 pm CDT I came in on the rear so.....I saw the meat toss which was funny...I was in hope of a sparring contest, maybe that could take place at the next one

Laroona 20:23:25 pm CDT jessenia I do not see why there cannot be teams of say 2 or 3 running around GS on one day/night hunting stuff down it would be fun with people using more rooms etc.

Ulrich 20:24:35 pm CDT Nerius I believe there was supposed to be a spar or two, but for some reason we have trouble getting participants.

We've tried to get Monday night fights going a couple of times, but lately I've had trouble making it, and so far, Zoran has been the only other one to want to fight.

I would like to get enough participants to hold tournaments in the future.

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:24:42 pm CDT doesn't hurt to try

zoya{GS}~t 20:25:00 pm CDT zoya's all up for it here in GS and the roleplay board even

Laroona 20:25:22 pm CDT exactly jessenia.... but then it would b up to the Captains to approve *S*

Ulrich 20:25:45 pm CDT jess that's a good point. As I've said many times when the lack of r/p came up in forum. Just do it.

Zoran 20:25:45 pm CDT lol what can I say I like to spar sits back and smirks

Nerius 20:25:57 pm CDT well perhaps Ulrich we might work on that....I know I could always use practice

Laroona 20:27:55 pm CDT There is an issue of where FW and white silks can or cannot go if say we run some fun events,, therefore would need Council approval *S*

Ulrich 20:28:03 pm CDT That's great Nerius.

Nerius, I'll be a bit iffy for the next couple of weeks, but I should soon be able to make it fairly reliably for fight night.

Zoran. Aye as do I, but we need other opponents, or one of us will get bored and kill the other. lol

Zoran 20:28:20 pm CDT it like everything if you make the post fun people will come into watch if sounds like it going to be a boring talk session well none will come

Zoran 20:29:06 pm CDT lol dam Ulrich I hate to see you die friend lol as I kid with him

Nerius 20:29:16 pm CDT understood...I will be out of country for 2 hands starting next week...so yes after that would be great

Xertog 20:30:40 pm CDT Here is JTs post of Monday night sparring for those that are interested:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We are going to try and make the Monday Night Sparring a regular thing for those who are interested in either fighting, or learning to fight. It will most likely be the old basic standard methods of 3/2 style posting for now, though I am interesting in messing around (In the future) with some of the more universal Gor styles that have cropped up over the last few years in various sites.

Ulrich and I shall hopefully be able to attend to oversee and it will be aroundabout the same time as the Forum is on a Sunday. If this should happen to change, we will make a modified announcement.

If anyone is interested in some basic training then get down and give Me 50, or, you can just mail Me or Ulrich.

It is not really about numbers, we do not expect a thing like this to suddenly make 20 people come out of the woodwork, but even if 1 or 2 people are interested in learning, then I am willing to give some of My time to it.

I wish you well.

(ADDITION: If the day and time is bad for those who are interested, and you can make another day at around the same time, get in touch as might be able to work around that, though count Me out for the weekends due to work.) "

Ramses 20:31:53 pm CDT I'd still be interested in a spar ... eyeing Zoran ... but Monday nights are often not good for Me

Nerius 20:31:56 pm CDT aye that I can do

Nerius 20:33:35 pm CDT I am free most any night...so to use a bad phrase...I am easy

Zoran 20:33:46 pm CDT will can set another night friend

Ulrich 20:34:37 pm CDT *looking to Ramses* Well Monday isn't my only night, just my most reliable night. Maybe we can work something out some time.

Ramses 20:35:45 pm CDT Ulrich ..I'll stay in touch I too am also travelling soon

DO GOREANS WORSHIP A HIGHER POWER?

Xertog 20:40:36 pm CDT OK new topic.

topic: Do goreans worship a higher power?

Lady Karima 20:42:15 pm CDT Hmm.. I thought Gorean Men believed they ARE the higher power ~chuckling softly~

Nerius 20:42:43 pm CDT yes We do...Odinn!

Nerius 20:43:03 pm CDT ok some of Us

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:44:24 pm CDT what about the Priest Kings?? girls sometimes offer up prayers to them in their serves.. when they rest the vessel against their hearts?

aurora{Ulrich}-t 20:45:04 pm CDT many goreans use the Priest Kings as their God Goreans believe in Their existence and Their power

zoya{GS}~t 20:45:33 pm CDT doesn't the gorean Free believe in the higher power being the Priest Kings?

Xertog 20:46:04 pm CDT I found an essay online that address this:

The prevailing belief on Gor is that the mysterious Priest-Kings are gods, extremely potent deities who rule over Gor. This polytheistic religion is presided over by the Initiate Caste, a priesthood that assists in the perpetuation that the Priest-Kings are actual gods. Many common Goreans pray to the Priest-Kings for their favor or intercession. They will attend ceremonies held in special temples, where a white railing separates the Initiates from the rest of the congregation. The High Castes though are more likely to see the Priest-Kings not as actual gods but more as very powerful allies, though still in a more dominant role over the Goreans due to their superior power. Few people doubt the existence and great power of the Priest-Kings. The Priest-Kings themselves do not require worship from Goreans, seeing the Initiates as an amusement. They only require obedience to their Technology and Weapon Laws. There are very few Goreans who understand the true nature of the Priest-Kings.

zoya{GS}~t 20:47:12 pm CDT jessenia, but does a girl have the right or previledge to pray to the Priest Kings? we are only animals with no rights in the eyes of goreans

Xertog 20:47:27 pm CDT The Wagon Peoples are more animistic, praying to the Spirit of the Sky, though they too accept the existence of the Priest-Kings. They may respect the Priest-Kings but choose not to worship them. Instead, they give their worship to the Spirit of the Sky. In their own creation myths, rains falling from the sky created the earth, bosk and Wagon Peoples. The rains were seen as a gift from the sky so they adopted the Spirit of the Sky as their deity. Interestingly enough, only men of the Wagon Peoples are permitted to pray to the Spirit of the Sky and they do so only when armed and mounted. They act toward the Spirit as would a warrior to his Ubar. In their beliefs, two main items are considered holy, the bosk and martial prowess.

Xertog 20:48:21 pm CDT Here is a link to the essay: pantheus.com/TGV/archive22002/TGV/philosophy.shtml

daria{GS} 20:48:23 pm CDT the Wagon People also doesn't eat anything that is grown under ground

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:49:06 pm CDT honestly zoya jesse cant answer that... and it's something she rarely puts in her serves.... for her own personal reasons.... but she just knows it was something she was taught that "could" be added to one's serves

aurora{Ulrich}-t 20:49:49 pm CDT Luther says

"the barbarian tribes can and do worship different gods, then on the surface it would appear that you can embrace any god without conflicting with Gorean philosophy"

Worship of the Priest-Kings is not a prerequisite to the Gorean philosophy. Atheism and agnosticism can easily fit within a Gorean philosophy"

zoya{GS}~t 20:50:13 pm CDT ~*~nods reading the essays~*~ yes, zoya has heard both before

daria{GS} 20:50:42 pm CDT There is another religion on Gor that appears to exist, at least in part, in some of the cities of Gor though it is likely more prevalent in the countryside. This small cult, much lesser in numbers and power than the worship of the Priest-Kings, worships the Sun. The books say almost nothing about this cult and it does not appear to possess much significance on Gor.

The barbaric lands also have their own religious beliefs. Some of these cultures acknowledge the existence of the Priest-Kings but they choose to pray to other deities. The Red Hunters appear to be one barbaric culture that does pray to the Priest-Kings. The Initiate Caste tries to eliminate the worship of at least some, if not all, of these other gods. They are fiercely defensive of their primacy on Gor

Xertog 20:53:14 pm CDT If any of you have seen Rollo or a few others from the north in the tavern there is something they do with there hands over a drink. I think it is way to show respect to Odin.

Is there a Jarl in the house that know about this??

zoya{GS}~t 20:53:37 pm CDT ~nods~ nor does zoya, jessenia, as zoya was taught we are not worthy to *pray* to any higher power, we solely depend on our Masters for everything.

thinking the thought behind it being that who would grant anything to a mere slave, she is nothing, lower than dirt...right?

jessenia{Rm}~t 20:55:48 pm CDT it's never been pointed out to jesse in that manner zoya.. tho she can see the logic in it she assumes...

she does know that she was told of One Jarl here at GS that doesn't like for girls to say in their serves that they "pray" they've been found pleasing.. so maybe that falls under that as well as to why

Nerius 20:55:58 pm CDT aye Xertog....we make the sign of thor's hammer over the drink a way of giving thanks..

Nerius 20:56:18 pm CDT prayer for protection

Nerius 20:56:59 pm CDT daria...very good

Xertog 20:57:03 pm CDT Do you mind showing us how that is done Nerius?

zoya{GS}~t 20:58:49 pm CDT ~smiles having not know anything of the North on this topic~ thank you daria...

Nerius 20:59:30 pm CDT in some parts of the north...after the bond has delivered ale usually from a pitcher...the horn is grasped......some knock the hammer to the table...then place there fist over the drink...also performing a hammer like motion...then the drink is taken

zoya{GS}~t 20:59:30 pm CDT zoya has never seen Master Rollo do that ~ponders and turns to watch Jarl Nerius~

Nerius 20:59:46 pm CDT or mead I should say

Taegan 20:59:52 pm CDT The Northern Jarl..before He drinks.."spills mead"..to Odin. It was a way of honoring Odin, offering him the first drink.

Nerius 21:00:55 pm CDT that also....Taegan...

Laroona 21:04:38 pm CDT back from RT I have not seen Rollo do the hammer sign I have seen others though GraigN comes to mind as one who will

Nerius 21:08:21 pm CDT I was looking for the exact quote though I cant locate it at this time

Laroona 21:08:37 pm CDT Taegan I am sure you have seen it too *S*

but here in GS it is rarely seen mostly because I think we have more Goreans from the South than the North *S*

Taegan 21:08:57 pm CDT The Forkbeard himself now, from a wooden keg, poured a great tankard of ale, which must have been of the measure of five gallons. Over this he then closed his fist. It was the sign of the hammer, the sign of Thor. The tankard then, with two great bronze handles, was passed from hands to hands among the rowers. The men threw back their heads and, the liquid spilling down their bodies, drank ale. It was the victory ale. ---Marauders of Gor, p 82

Laroona 21:10:28 pm CDT From the Central Fire "Worship and the Sign of the Hammer:

"Standing on the fragments of of the circle, Ivar Forkbeard cried out, his ax lifted, and his left hand too, 'Praise to Odin!' And then, throwing his ax to his left shoulder, holding it there by his left hand he turned and faced the Sardar, and lifted his fist, clenched. It was not only a sign of defiance to the Priest-Kings, but the fist, the sign of the hammer. It was the sign of Thor." Marauders of Gor, pg. 48

"The Forkbeard himself now, from a wooden keg, poured a great tankard of ale, which must have been the measure of five gallons. Over this he then closed his fist. It was the sign of the hammer, the sign of Thor..." Marauders of Gor, pg. 82 "

Xertog 21:12:01 pm CDT I think that will wrap up tonights forum. Thanks for attending. jessenia thanks for scribing..
