Topic:

Considering that the books state that Thentis did NOT trade black wine beans, and that they had a monopoly on growing them, how do we explain the apparent availability of them everywhere in the books?

  Laroona   19:54:42 pm CDT

was this one area John Norman forgot were restricted to a certain area in his writings

   Xertog   19:55:07 pm CDT

I don't recall that they did not trade black wine beans. I do recall that it was not a common inexpensive beverage like coffee is on Earth. I have doubts it would be found in a paga tavern in Port Kar. It is why I never order it.

  Dak   19:55:11 pm CDT

raiders maybe

tersa {GS}  19:55:52 pm CDT

or, he supposed that there might have been another market for them, perhaps something like what we call a "black market" and it was traded by less that reputable employees of the city?

  Laroona   19:56:16 pm CDT

they are supposed to be expensive and rare....

aidan(GS~O~)  19:56:26 pm CDT

could had they been stolen Master, an sold on the blackmarket

  Laroona   19:57:00 pm CDT

and a black market would not be out of the question either

Lady Lita  19:57:07 pm CDT

Well, Xertog, I can barely see it as available in Port Kar, simply because Port Kar is a City of Pirates. with a Caste of Thieves. It is a Port City, where all kinds of trade goods funnel through. If there IS a "Black Market" in black wine beans, I would think They would have it. I believe even the Wagon Peoples, on the plains, a long way from Thentis, apparently had a supply of it in the books.

  Laroona   19:58:01 pm CDT

plus Lita Port Kar has a port and all sorts of goods could flow through

 Lady Lita  19:59:47 pm CDT

I don't have at hadn the exact quote on Thentis not trading the beans, as I haven't yet had time to search it out, but Ubar Luther supports that fact too, as follows: "Black Wine: This is a coffee-like drink made from beans grown in the mountain city of Thentis. It is very strong and bitter. It is traditionally served very hot, with yellow or white sugars and powdered bosk milk, in tiny cups. Other sugars, spices or cream may also be served with it. The cups may have small handles or not. In some ways, it is like expresso coffee. In the river cities and some northern cities, the phrase "second slave" indicates that you do not want any creams or sugars with your black wine. This comes from the custom in some areas for two kajirae to serve black wine. One kajira is responsible for putting down the cups, taking the orders and seeing that the drink is prepared according to the customer's preferences. The second kajira only pours the black wine. In some areas, there are more formal blackwine services, such as in the Tahari region. Thentis does not trade the beans to make this drink. In Thentis, it is commonly only served in High Caste Homes. It is an expensive luxury outside the area of Thentis, affordable only by the wealthy. Most paga taverns would not serve blackwine due to its rarity and expense.

Ubar Luther"

He also agrees it wouldn't normally be served in paga taverns.

   Xertog   20:00:01 pm CDT

There was a lot of raiding and piracy which could explain some of it. Norman also had trouble keeping some things straight through out the series. I think he forgot what he wrote years earlier and editors never picked up on the contradictions.

Lady Lita  20:00:23 pm CDT

Agreed, Laroona.

Lady Lita  20:00:47 pm CDT

That is true also, Xertog. *S*

  Laroona   20:01:37 pm CDT

that is true Xertog

aidan(GS~O~)  20:01:43 pm CDT

also Master he was wondering if the ships of acquisition would bring back thing like earth blackwine on some of there journeys

Lady Lita  20:01:54 pm CDT

I can't even remember half the time what I came after when I leave one room to go to another, so I cannot imagine having to keep track of what I might have written in almost 30 books! *LOL*

  snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure   20:02:38 pm CDT

wasn't there some kind of blackwine war...and Thentis fell...maybe they didn't have the same kind of control after that

   Xertog   20:02:45 pm CDT

We just finished read Raiders of Gor a few weeks ago on Tuesdays. I only recall the Wagon People drinking Bosk milk, paga or kalana.

tersa {GS}  20:03:30 pm CDT

*ponders briefly* a girl just finished the Nomads of Gor and only came across one mention of the blackwine.. brief and very little detail

  Laroona   20:03:41 pm CDT

snowrose correct and again that could be an explanation

tersa {GS}  20:04:57 pm CDT

It wasn't the Wagon people drinking it.. but others

Lady Lita  20:05:28 pm CDT

No, it wasn't in Raiders, but I thought I had read it somewhere. As I said, My quote search on black wine is not yet complete.

  Laroona   20:05:32 pm CDT

Xertog or curds yukkkkkkkkkkk LOL

Lady Lita 20:07:16 pm CDT

yes, snowrose, that could be too.

   Xertog   20:09:07 pm CDT

Here is a quote:

A girl slave, in a white tunic and white collar, barefoot, came to the table, and knelt before it. What is that I smell? I asked. Black wine, she said, from the Mountains of Thentis. I had heard of black wine, but had never had any. It is drunk in Thentis, but I had never heard of it being much drunk in any of the other cities. Bring two bowls, I said. Two?, asked the girl. The slave, I said, indicating Elizabeth, will taste it first. Of course Master, said the girl. And put bread over the fire, I said, and honey, and the eggs of vulos, and fried tarsk meat and a Torian larma fruit. The girl nodded and rising, gracefully, backing away a step or two, head down, turned and went to the kitchen. I have heard, I said to Elizabeth, that black wine is served hot. Incredible, she smiled. In short order two bowls, steam curling out of them, were brought and placed on the table. I sat there staring down at them, and Elizabeth did, too. Then I picked up one of the thick heavy claw bowls. Since no one was looking, we knocked the bowls together gently, and put them to our lips. It was extremely strong, and bitter, but it was hot, and unmistakably, it was coffee. I shared the breakfast with Elizabeth, who informed me that it was better than the porridge below in the trough in the feeding room for female staff slaves, marvelous though the latter might have been.. I envy you free ones, said Elizabeth (she was an earth barbarian). Next time, you be the slave and let me be the Assassin. Actually, I said to Elizabeth, this is very rare. Thentis does not trade the beans for black wine. I have heard of a cup of black wine in Ar, some years ago, selling for a silver eighty-piece. Even in Thentis black wine is used commonly only in High Caste homes. Perhaps it is from Earth? she asked. Originally doubtless beans were brought from Earth, I said, much as certain other seeds, and silk worms and such, but I doubt very much that the ship I saw last night had in its cargo anything as trivial as the beans for black wine."

Assassin, page 106

(That is from next weeks Tuesday night reading)

Lady Lita  20:10:34 pm CDT

ewwww Laroona! I can barely eat cottage cheese on a salad, I could NEVER drink curds! *LOL*

  Laroona   20:11:44 pm CDT

heee reminds me of when I lived on the farm and the milk went off. the smell is enough LOl

   Xertog   20:11:50 pm CDT

I meant Nomads not Raiders

Lady Lita  20:11:56 pm CDT

yup

 tersa {GS}  20:12:14 pm CDT

so, at that price.. a normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill Tavern in Port Kar... would have no access to such beans or the blackwine?

  Laroona   20:13:56 pm CDT

tersa not usually unless some pirates got hold of them, they would be rare in Port Kar, as no wagons can cross the marshlands

Lady Lita  20:14:24 pm CDT

again, not necessarily, tersa. As we have said, there was probably a "black market" in the beans. And since Port Kar is a City of Pirates and Thieves, as well as a Port City for trade goods, if it was available anywhere, it would be there. Point is, it IS on the Tavern Menu. Though I'd think it would cost more than it is listed at.

Lady Lita  20:15:44 pm CDT

*grins* i have no doubt Do Urden, the silver-tongued Pirate, could lay His hands on some for Us if He wished, and the bribe was large enough! *giggle*

  Laroona   20:16:18 pm CDT

Like a lot of things that is available in GS the slaves do need to know how to serve *S*

Lady Lita  20:16:33 pm CDT

Also, would a Tavern owned by the Council of Captains of Port Kar be "run-of-the-mill"?

Lady Lita  20:17:06 pm CDT

Yep.

tersa {GS}  20:17:55 pm CDT

Excuse this one.. she doesn't think it would be "run-of-the mill" and does wish some clarification to be given about how it's to be served.. whether it's something kept over the Pits or prepared individually like tea

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:19:20 pm CDT

tersa....serving blackwine is part of your training sweets...you will learn that in one of your lessons *s

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:21:01 pm CDT

aurora understands what you meant tersa

its an expensive drink to be served in a tavern

  Laroona   20:21:06 pm CDT

tersa it takes time ot learn all the serves *S*

Lady Lita  20:21:21 pm CDT

Here is a short serve from the books, tersa, if tht helps: Susan then approached the diners. "Black wine, Masters?'

she asked.

"Yes," said Drusus Rencius.

"Yes," said Publius.

Susan then turned to me and snapped her fingers. "Sheila," she called.

"Yes, Mistress," I said. I took the vessel of black wine, removing it from its warmer, and put it on its tray, that already bearing the tiny cups, the creams and sugars, the spices, tbe napkins and spoons. I then carried the tray, with the black wine, hot and steaming, to the table and put it down there. Susan then, as "first slave," took the orders and did the measuring and mixing; I, as "second slave," did the pouring. Afterward~ I returned the tray 'to the serving table, and the vessel of black wine to its warmer I then joined Susan, kneeling beside her in the vicinity of the serving table.

Kajira

tersa {GS}  20:22:15 pm CDT

*nods* a girl knows it takes time to learn all of the serves and doesn't expect to know how to do each one of them within the span of sixty seconds, but.. as it should be known.. this girl has served blackwine on more than one occasion, and has been told the serves were successful

   Xertog   20:22:44 pm CDT

From World of Gor wen site :

Blackwine, from the early days of Tarl Cabot's journeys into the counter earth, was said to be a rare, expensive and rather exclusive product of well guarded fields on the slopes of Thentis. It was said that only in Thentis could one find this delicacy and that the only way another City could serve it was by acquiring the beans from thieves. As time passes and the reader is carried across the pasangs to the various lands and Cities, he will note blackwine seems to become part of the Gorean way in even the remotest areas.

This was the official web site of Norman a few years back and they mention the contradiction.

tersa {GS}  20:23:13 pm CDT

the only time that it wasn't truly.. was with the present Mistress Lita when the amount of grounds added was in question, which is all this one would like cleared up... -exactly- how much grounds are to be added?

  Laroona   20:23:16 pm CDT

why there is a short serve page for slaves to have handy as a guide *S*

  Laroona   20:24:33 pm CDT

Xertog so it would then be logical for the thieves than run rife in Port Kar would have blackwine beans

  Xertog   20:25:02 pm CDT

rti phone

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:25:20 pm CDT

tersa....so someone asked you to make blackwine from scratch?

its assumed its ready and fresh to be served to the Free

especially if you are a NEW slave

  snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure   20:25:41 pm CDT

girl doesn't think we have to be exacting in the amount of grounds added...would a customer really care?

  Laroona   20:26:01 pm CDT

tersa I believe there is always a kettle of blackwine brewing over the firepits... and then the milk & sugars are gathered when one collects the cups and placed on tray before going to the pits and ladling out the blackwine

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:26:09 pm CDT

quotes of posts on serves from books are not always the way it is expected of slaves to serve in GS

Lady Lita  20:26:56 pm CDT

Here is the short serve from the slave pages, tersa: "Blackwine: brewed from the blackwine beans grown primarily in Thentis.

Rather expensive. Similar to Earthen coffee, although much stronger

• served in bowls for Masters, small cups for Mistresses

• brews in kettle over the flames of the firepit

• served first or second slave

• first slave: yellow and white sugars and bosk cream

• second slave: black

• cream is kept in the cold room in a small clay pitcher

• add sugars and milk at the Frees feet"

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:26:59 pm CDT

thank You Mistress

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:26:59 pm CDT

thank You Mistress

 Laroona   20:27:35 pm CDT

**slaps my typist**

Lady Lita 20:28:00 pm CDT

No, aurora, I did not ask that it be made from scratch.

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:28:27 pm CDT

so may a girl ask what You asked for Mistress Lita?

  Laroona   20:28:31 pm CDT

it is my belief that tea would be the only drink made fresh be it bazi or a normal tea serve

tersa {GS}  20:29:22 pm CDT

Mistress Lita didn't request it from scratch, but upon asking another present girl.. it was assumed between the both of use that it would be as it is such an expensive drink.. but, tersa was wondering at the amount of grounds, because that is what came up into conversation.. how much do we put when it is made from scratch?

Lady Lita  20:29:41 pm CDT

I asked for black wine, second slave, aurora

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:31:09 pm CDT

smiles...tersa...GS slaves make blackwine...they do it as a chore and post it on the corks....it is assumed slaves of GS are always busy doing chores...and part of doing that chore is to research it...do the homework...show your knowledge and interest...no one will give you those answers...but it shows a slave dedicated to her home that does that work *s*

  Laroona   20:31:23 pm CDT

when chores are done it can be that beans are ground by battering in a repcloth and then added to water and hung over the fires

that is how I think blackwine can be prepared *S*

  Laroona   20:31:44 pm CDT

auroa you beat me to it lOl

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:31:57 pm CDT

thank You Mistress Lita

tersa {GS}  20:33:09 pm CDT

a girl thanks everyone kindly and will now cease to discuss a topic that seems to be so touchy to everyone.. she appreciates everyone's opinion and will do her homework as it is assigned to her

  Laroona   20:33:27 pm CDT

slaps an r into aurora

  shaina   20:33:31 pm CDT

shaina came in right after the serve.. and mentioned that she had always been trained that it was already brewed and waiting... shaina thinks thats when the discussion got started about it being expensive.. and perhaps the notion that it would be brewed by order.... instead of it "brewing all day"

if that makes sense

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:33:36 pm CDT

its not touchy sweets...not at all

  Laroona   20:34:37 pm CDT

LOL same as paga brewing all day.. it would get stale

and frankly how often is blackwine asked for?

aidan(GS~O~)  20:35:58 pm CDT

he smiles as he recalls the scent of paga

  snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure   20:36:11 pm CDT

girl thinks the description of the slave herself is what is most wanted...her grace and beauty can be appreciated by the picture she paints...the drink itself is really just the vehicle to deliver it

  Laroona   20:36:13 pm CDT

tersa this discussion is what forums are for to ask questions

  Laroona   20:36:46 pm CDT

snowrose a very good point *S*

   Dak   20:37:31 pm CDT

I order blackwine occasionally in the mornings, but since what I get is left to imagination, I've never worried about how it was brewed, *smiles*

Lady Lita  20:37:58 pm CDT

black wine is in one place likened to expresso. I have also heard it likened to turkish coffee. Now the expresso recipes I have seen reommend anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon of the ground beans per cup.

  Laroona   20:38:34 pm CDT

Dak and that is why slaves are trained a certain way how to serve and why there are examples on the website of what is to be expected

   Dak   20:38:58 pm CDT

aye, Laroona , I agree, the serve itself is more important than the product, *smiles*

  shaina   20:39:12 pm CDT

and if shaina may say..

she understand there is something to be said for sticking to the books.. but to her that comes more into play about how slaves are dealt with.. punished... traded.. sold... and how spars are role played out.. and business such as that....

in her own opinion.. whether or not blackwine is kept over the spit or brewed by order is minute compared to other stuff... as aurora stated.. its always been something there for slaves to do as a chore.. if they do them.... does it hurt role play that much to leave it like it is?

  Laroona   20:39:46 pm CDT

I would be very displeased if I knew slave knew how to serve and they did not serve the way they were taught in GS

   Dak   20:40:05 pm CDT

exactly and why there is a menu, so they will know how to serve the products , *smiles*

Lady Lita  20:40:44 pm CDT

So Dak, are you saying that if a slave serves black wine with curdled or spoiled bosk milk in it, as long as it is beautifully served, it's o.k., being as the"serve itself is more important than the product,"?

  Laroona   20:41:41 pm CDT

I would consider the delivery and process more important as well as slaves describing

so I can almost taste and smell the drink or food...

  shaina   20:42:02 pm CDT

if shaina may butt in.. she wouldn't serve curdled milk.. that's something you can obviously see when it tumbles out in chunks...

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:42:45 pm CDT

aurora's concern with the serve of anything...does not have to be blackwine...is the questions sometimes or the challenges to NEW slaves...less than one or two weeks in GS...

training is set up in a way that slaves learn more difficult serves as they go along

so if a Free is going to dish out challenges and questions please allow the slave some time to go away...research...learn and come back with the answer

Lady Lita  20:43:42 pm CDT

shaina, My point is that the product should carry SOME importance! *chuckle*

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:43:48 pm CDT

surely as slave would see the curdled or soured bosk milk and not serve it...

  Laroona   20:44:04 pm CDT

aurora why I only aks slaves to serve to their training level...

and why I am always willing to help any new slave

tersa {GS}  20:44:06 pm CDT

*giggles at shaina*

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:44:37 pm CDT

and my point is that You as a FW Mistress Lita have to give these girls time to learn what exactly the product is and become knowledgeable in it

  snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure   20:44:50 pm CDT

girl hopes no one would be so disrespectful as to serve like that Mistress...she was talking about the Masters when she made her post...

  Laroona   20:45:03 pm CDT

LOL sell curdled milk to the wagon people LOL

   Dak   20:45:19 pm CDT

well, I order second slave, anyway, but I believe in The GS tavern not serving anything bad, *shrugs* I assume everything I order will be in good condition , I've always trusted anything served in GS was not spoiled.

tersa {GS}  20:46:23 pm CDT

this girl takes pride, and rightly so - she believes, in anything she serves.. whether it is considered "real" or not to those present.. and just wishes to be able to learn and do the serves to the best of her ability..

  Laroona   20:46:54 pm CDT

Dak you never know what you could end up with

too often I see Free never follow a serve socould have it slingshot at them and they wouldnot know...

Lady Lita  20:47:08 pm CDT

aurora, I was not implying that any slave in GS would serve curdled bosk milk. I was trying to make a point tht while the serve is paranount, some consideration must be given to the product as well.

  shaina   20:48:18 pm CDT

exactly Master Dak.. alot of the girls serving goes on assumptions...

when she enters the cold room.. she assumes someone has been in and weeded out the bad fruits... the milk was delivered fresh that day... the meat is not rancid... and so on and so on... and we're trained that the blackwine is readily available and kept brewing on the pit...

  Laroona   20:49:11 pm CDT

tersa I try and get slaves to be descriptive in body movements etc.. so when they get further into their training they become alluring in what they serve and their bodies desirable to the males

but I also am one who likes the serves done step by step and again as I repeat to the level of expectation of slaves training

   Dak   20:49:53 pm CDT

well, I read every word of the girls serve, so I know what they have done, but like you say, I am actually more interested in how they serve, than the product, *smiles*

Lady Lita  20:50:34 pm CDT

tersa, in additon to everything else, there is not always only one way to do something. for example, first and second slave with black wine, serving varous beverages hot, room temperature or chilled. Or different Free preferring say, different amounts of sugars and or creamer in tea or black wine. So one needs to learn to be flexible to sit the individual Free's tasstes.

  Laroona   20:50:41 pm CDT

Dak I have been present when you have not read every part of a serve...

  Dak   20:50:53 pm CDT

I second that also Laroona

tersa {GS}  20:51:10 pm CDT

of course, Mistress Laroona.. that's what the serves a girl does allows her to practice such things and a girl often warns the Patrons of the Tavern (even ones she has served before) that she still wears white silks and hasn't been formally trained on a lot of the requested orders.

  Xertog   20:51:48 pm CDT

If girls are not sure about how a drink is served the 'quick serve notes' page on the GS web pages is a good reference tool to give you the basics. For example Rence beer:

Rence beer: steeped, boiled, and fermented from crushed seeds and the

whitish pith of the rence plant.

• Served in a gourd flagon; and the flagon is uncorked at the Frees feet and poured into a tankard

• Gourds kept in the cold room

. The gourd is the casing in which the ale is placed...she takes a tankard along to the Free, pulls out the cork, and fills the tankard from the gourd

From the above a girl should be able to do this serve if she already know the basics of serving even if she has never Rence Beer served.

   Dak   20:52:18 pm CDT

oh, how can you tell ? I seldom have time to speak to anyone becuz I'm reading the serves

  aurora{Ulrich}~t   20:52:22 pm CDT

the Free always have the right to question a slave...to encourage a slave to learn..that is paramount to the role play between a slave and a Free...

its just that being a new slave...is so intimidating...there is so much to learn a girls head is swimming...

tersa {GS}  20:52:33 pm CDT

*nods in Mistress Lita's direction*

that is something a girl is learning, slowly.. she's started learning what pleases one might not the other, but is truly having a rough time when it comes to each person being nitpicky over one thing and not another.

  Laroona   20:52:34 pm CDT

good to hear tersa *S*

Lady Lita  20:53:00 pm CDT

years ago I knew a male slave who, when he felt the Free were not paying attention, would openly put all kinds of bizarre items in the drinks, and no one ever noticed. *chuckle*

  Laroona   20:53:48 pm CDT

LOL because you missed when slaves were in service and ordered as one example or times when you are multi-tasking

aidan(GS~O~)  20:53:59 pm CDT

laughs

  Laroona   20:54:18 pm CDT

LOL Lita I have seen the same LOL

Lady Lita  20:54:51 pm CDT

probably was the same slave, Laroona! *LOL*

  shaina   20:55:06 pm CDT

shaina almost spit in one of her former Master's drinks...

almost.... *laughs*

  Laroona   20:55:10 pm CDT

why I am always willing ot help new slaves knowing it is difficult to be pelasing and how intimidating it is

  Laroona   20:55:55 pm CDT

RT calls

serve well girls *S*

 Lady Lita  20:56:07 pm CDT

*winks at shaina* and that is not the worst thing you could have done, shaina! *LOL*

tersa {GS}  20:56:10 pm CDT

a girl wishes you well, Mistress Laroona.

aidan(GS~O~)  20:56:16 pm CDT

well wishes Mistress

Lady Lita  20:56:46 pm CDT

Laroona, I wish You well, enough, and great joy.

   Dak   20:57:26 pm CDT

oh, that was only one time, and the tavern was extremely busy , and i didn't have a slave in My service either , I had missed your order , I didn't see it as a problem , *smiles*

  snowrose{JTr}'s pleasure   20:57:28 pm CDT

Goodnight Mistress Laroona

  Xertog   21:00:28 pm CDT

I try and read everything a girl writes on a serve. But there are times when I get inundated with whispers regarding GS business and I end up skimming them.

   Dak   21:01:36 pm CDT

aye, Captain, it is hard to be perfect all the time

Lady Lita  21:02:27 pm CDT

happens to all of us from time to time, Xertog. *S*

  Xertog   21:04:24 pm CDT

I am going to call the forum to a close. I have a carry over topic for next week. Also don't forget the book discussion is Tuesday 7:30 GS time (Central US/Canada) We are reading Assassins of Gor and should be up to I thing page 101..

Cary over topic:

Must a girl repeat her kneel whether as a tower slave or pleasure slave.. describing each of the basic things, over and over and over.. each time she does so, rather than just it being said that she kneels as a tower slave or as a pleasure slave?

Lady Lita  21:05:13 pm CDT

Good topic, Xertog

tersa {GS}  21:05:55 pm CDT
